The Great Gong Show of 2023!
We all gathered for the Annual Dinner and Awards Evening at Christchurch, Purley on February 11th. New boy Martin Bates shared his experience
What a fabulous evening at the Anerley BC dinner. Extremely well organised and executed, so big thanks to our Social Secretary Jo for putting it all together.
The food was beautifully cooked and presented, so very well done to our chef from Epsom College and, most importantly, the raffle raised a staggering £550 to share amongst our two chosen charities, which was a brilliant result, so give yourselves a pat on the back for that.
On a personal level, as many of you know, 2022 for me ended with great sadness, so my award yesterday evening in winning the SF Edge New Members Cup put back some light in my life. Well done to all the raffle prize winners, and if only I could have lip read my wife, Lisa, a little better, I’d have got that first prize!
Prizes awarded this year were:
John Jackson Cup for Ladies 10 mile – Dee Rutter
Dee did very well in her first time trial and it is great to have a new name on the trophy.
Anerley Cup for Mens 10 mile – Barrie Foster
Usually the winner of multiple cups, Barrie probably did the fastest 5 times of the year over 10 miles.
Attendance ‘A’ Shield – Karen Wrighton
Karen does a lot of cycling, clocking up some 6,000 miles per year. Fortunately many of those miles are with the Anerley.
John Turnbull Cup for Ladies 25 miles – Fran Stedman
Fran rode a hilly route in appalling conditions, more grateful to finish than aiming for a better time this year.
Charles Lawes Cup for Mens 50 miles – Barrie Foster
Can anyone beat this guy? Come on, he is over 70 years old!
Anne Butler Cup for Ladies 50 miles – Jo Smith, Denise Bray
Denise and Jo rode in Vätternrundan events completing three rides of 100km, 150km and 300km withing a week. A really great accomplishment!

RH Fry Cup Men for 100 miles – John Diamond
John completed the Ride London event on the new Essex course in 5 hours 8 minutes and 54 seconds. Pretty good going!
Anerley Challenge Cup for Ladies 100 miles – Vivienne Inglis
Viv completed the Ride London in under 7 hours.
SF Edge Cup for most improved New Member – Martin Bates
Martin was given this award because of the massive improvement in his riding sunce he joined the club. A regular member of club rides and a valuable contributor to our Chat groups.
Appletree Shield Award for Merit – Jo Smith, Denise Bray
After completing a gruelling week in Sweden, these ladies definitely deserve the Merit Award.
Mountain Memorial Shield for Men 25 mile – Barrie Foster
Barrie’s 25 mile time was fast enough to win him a club bronze award. The first club award for many years!
President’s Award – Jim Kennison
The final award for services to the club went to someone incredibly deserving. Jim has led more rides than anyone else since the COVID era and we are very grateful that he has stepped up this time.
