Italian police have arrested a man after his car ploughed into a group of cyclists, killing eight of them. The driver was overtaking on a two-lane road near Lamezia Terme in the southern region of Calabria when he hit the oncoming cyclists, officials said. Four people were also injured in the collision, including the driver, who is a Moroccan national.

He is being held under police guard in hospital on suspicion of manslaughter, according to the Ansa news agency. A police spokesman, who declined to give his name, told the Associated Press news agency that the driver had tested positive for marijuana.

Visibility and driving conditions were reportedly good at the time.

Ansa said the group of Sunday-morning cyclists was affiliated with a gym in Lamezia Terme.

UPDATE: The dead are reported to be: Rosario Perri (55), Francesco Stranges (51); Pottin Vinicius (47), John Cannon (58), Pasquale De Luca (35), Domenico Palace and Fortunato Bernardi, whose age is unknown.
