Tuesday Ride: 23rd May 2017
Seven starters for Group ‘A’ with Dave Go on his single-speed who was soon punished by being sent up Portnalls (Outwood Lane being closed). This also necessitated a short run up the A217 which makes Walton-on-the hill even more of a relaxation. Then Leatherhead, a footpath (above) and the Great Bookham entry into Polesden Lacey.
Here our Capt’n not only was pressed into giving a motivational talk to a rambling group – but also had time to do a little gardening – or is it flower arranging?
Refreshed and with no sight of Group ‘B’ we left for a scoot along the bottom of Ranmore and a quick zip up Box Hill to admire the view:
Back to Walton and onto Banstead descending via Woodmansterne for an enjoyable ride on a day that left its best until after we finished.
38.48 miles at a moving average of 12.35 mph.
Des had 9 or 10 in the ‘B’ Group. He writes:
To avoid the 20% climb from West Humble up towards Polsden Lacey, I took a roundabout route via Leatherhead and up Lower Rd to Great Bookham to arrive at the tea stop from the opposite direction. On the return leg we had the benefit of the 20% but going down it.
The high light was that we lost 2 going thru the back streets of Leatherhead, one of whom was Tom Tom! We communicated by phone but Tom Tom and his companion never arrived at Polsden Lacey. Well and truly lost they headed up to NT tea bar on top of Box Hill, where eventually we all regrouped.
My mileage was 39.
