The Marshall Plan

QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn’t it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles rather than by the artifice of a derailleur? We are getting soft. Give me a fixed gear.” – Henri Desgrange, 1903. Cyclist, first organizer of Tour de France

BICYCLIST  OF THE TOUR

Simon Yates - so long under the shadow of Chris Froome - now leads the Giro d'Italia which has returned to its native land. Well Siciliy anyway where yesterday Yates, 26, attacked in the last two kilometres of the 163km stage to Mount Etna with his rivals for the general classification unable to react. He now leads from reigning champion Tom Dumoulin by 16 seconds, with Chaves 26 seconds back.

Chris Froome sits eighth, one minute 10 seconds behind his compatriot, after crossing the line in the second group.

At 1.72 m (5 ft 8 in) and 58 kg (9.1st) he is a tiny lad but with a growing reputation. Has his time come? More: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Yates_(cyclist)

BICYCLE GROUPSET OF THE WEEK

Italian cycle engineering is almost synonymous with Compag. Lusting after a gorgeous frame is surely something no club member has been spared. But Compag's latest revelation is a record - or the Super Record to be more precise. Just announced - includes a 12 gear cassette. The chain must be almost paper thin. But have they got rid of that awful freewheel squeal?

Or will it come from your wallet instead? Here is a review: http://road.cc/content/review/202919-campagnolo-super-record-road-groupset

2C2C - LE TOUR DE BRETAGNE

Early April is chancy for weather - especially this year - but you may spot two Anerleyians together with three friends on an early expedition to the most exposed part of France - Brittany - and got away with it. Indeed revelled in it.

Six days going from La Manche to the Bay of Biscay and back again - a double coast to coast and surprisingly unhilly. Do try it. Full story, route and pics here: https://anerleybc.org/2c2c-a-tour-of-brittany/

HERNE HILL VELODROME WORLD CYCLING REVIVAL FESTIVAL

Dodgy blokes, dodgy lampshades but beautiful bikes!

The World Cycling Revival, held 14th-16th June 2018, will be a high-end heritage sporting, music and lifestyle festival celebrating 200 years of the bicycle. The event is set in the halcyon days of the Herne Hill Velodrome, when it hosted the London 1948 Olympics, and the event’s patrons will be invited to wear vintage themed clothing throughout the whole festival.

Better start saving 'cos it's a tad expensive: http://www.cyclingrevival.com/news/pp-world-cycling-revival-at-iconic-herne-hill-velodrome-launches-for-june-2018/

FINALLY

A Cycle Marshall should have many skills. Standing through any weather, encouraging the competitors and making clear and distinct signals.

Being able to do the 100 metres faster than Hussein Bolt might also come in useful as this hapless marshall had to perform in last week's Tour de Yorkshire. Click on the picture or here to read the report and watch the hair raising video: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-44029144
