Anerley Gazette, March 2023

Mark H does have a helmet!

After a bitterly cold but dry February, the usual warnings of upcoming droughts have started to appear. Presumably this is why the Rain Gods have promised a week of snow, ice and rain. Never mind, at least it means I am not missing much while hiding in my bunker after contracting covid. In fact, we have just had the first two confirmed cases of covid transmission on a club ride but fortunately neither have had serious effects.

Please make sure you read the new Club Handbook, it includes a rule change that affects everybody on an Anerley BC ride.

Des has abandoned me to do this month on my own so let us hope the wheels don’t fall off during this edition!

THE GREAT GONG SHOW OF 2023!

The Annual Dinner was very well attended and the silverware looked it’s splendid best, as usual the great and worthy members of our club ran off with the trophies.

New boy Martin Bates shared his experience of an Anerley tradition and even managed to win his own prize! https://anerleybc.org/the-great-gong-show/

AWARDS ADDENDUM – PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT

Although only some got the big Silver, the club had a great year’s cycling in 2022 and we must not forget to celebrate all the rides and challenges we witnessed in the first post-pandemic cycling season.

THE LONG AWAITED CLUB HANDBOOK

In the past, the club produced printed handbooks for members. These were expensive to produce and hard to keep up to date. The new handbook is published on our website and you can read or download a copy whenever you want. You may also obtain a copy from the Club Secretary (currently Fran Stedman()on request.

A GENTLE RECOVERY RIDE WITH MARK HANCOCK

After another stent recently fitted in one of my coronary arteries, Mark Hancock’s promised flat ride really appealed to me.

GRAVELLING WITH JOHN DIAMOND

John’s offroad / gravel rides are beginning to pick up a following so I joined him to see what the fuss was about.

The Wettest Part of the Ride!

Great fun with a twist in the tale. See https://anerleybc.org/gravelling-with-john-diamond/

ANOTHER MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB

Des braces himself for Snowdon – his first mountain climb in 5 years by looking back on his last mountain climb.

RUSSIAN CONNECTIONS

At Deptford Creek where the River Ravensbourne flows into the River Thames, you will find a monument to a Russian.

AT-HOME CIRCUIT TRAINING WORKOUT – NO EQUIPMENT NEEDED!

Now that the weather has resumed its proper winter form, we get a chance to think about training without a bike. Having heart issues and a severe hatred of turbo-trainers, I can thoroughly recommend circuit training. For me this started in cardio-rehab classes provided gratis with the NHS. The variation meant that this non-boring intensive workout was something I could fit in between rides or when the weather outside is frightful! Maybe next time I will detail my own workout but this article contains a great place to start and it is all equipment free!

Current Covid guidance from our Club Captain

The government has removed all domestic COVID restrictions in England. So dealing with COVID has effectively become advice on how to reduce the risks of catching and spreading COVID. This includes the following:

Get vaccinated

Let fresh air in if meeting indoors, or meet outside:

Consider wearing a face covering in crowded, enclosed spaces

Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms, and stay at home if positive”
