In praise of … The Buff
Christmas shopping time is here and the colder weather has already arrived. A solution to both problems is THE BUFF! It really is my second most favourite clothing kit for the cyclist*
Why? Well the perennial problem of our type of cycling is you can never get your clothing right. At best you are cold for half the ride and boiling for the rest.
The Buff is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of balancing hot & cold. The word comes from the Spanish word ‘bufanda’ meaning scarf. An idea that has been engineered into something a lot more useful as you can see in the video above.
Not only can it protect your neck but as the temperatures decrease it covers the ears and as much of your head as you wish up to true balaclava protection. And when the sun comes out it can be screwed up and takes less space than a handkerchief (no, don’t ..). But then it is trivial to wash out overnight on a long tour.
Not only that but it comes in thousands of colours and designs to co-ordinate with anything. Especially if the video gives you some ideas on how it can make you look cool off the bike. All for not much more than a tenner.
