QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Cyclists see considerably more of this beautiful world than any other class of citizens.” – Dr K.K. Doty

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Paul S stole Tina's Downhill Freewheel crown last Sunday in Marden Park. Congrats!

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

This just might be a winner for next year's Downhill weighing in at grunchy 19Kg. It's electrified but not quite to the extent of electrifying bike thieves. But it has another way of getting back at them.

First the battery and lights are integrated into the frame so no light fingered work there. Next an invisible rear wheel lock activated via a secret button. then a powerful inbuilt speaker shrieks if it's feeling touched and a menacing skull and crossbones starts flashing.

Impressive, but surely, not too much of a challenge to London's finest thieves? Absolutely right. One was stolen within the hour of being parked in East London while being reviewed by Steve Hogarty of CityAM. But part of the price is a dedicated team of bike hunters who will track down its GSM signal and bring it home. Here it is happening by Twitterfeed:

AGM REPORT

Thank you Secretary Fran for so quickly producing this summary of last Sunday's AGM. & Frank for the pix.

  • All officers returned to their places, except for Paul W who has taken over the role of social secretary.
  • A rule amendment was made - each member of Anerley BC is responsible for getting their third-party insurance. They must have this to ride with the club. As a club we are affiliated to cycling UK, and members can get a discounted rate on Insurance if they mention they are a member of Anerley BC.
  • We are considering joining British Cycling, although no firm decision has been made yet, this is to be discussed further in a future meeting.
  • The club are considering getting a second supplier for club kit, based in Brixton. They will also buy examples of club kit for members to examine the sizes and determine which is best for them. This can be done at various meetings held throughout the year. It was agreed that the club would start stocking Gillets for members to examine, and progress to other club kit if it seemed sensible.
  • It was agreed that there should be a Ladies Cup for 10 miles and one for 25 miles, to have some parity with the men’s awards. Meike will buy the 25-mile trophy and it will be named the John Turnball trophy. The club will buy the 10-mile trophy and it will be named the John Jackson trophy.
  • There is an alternative ride to the Pru 100, called the Rebel 100. Ten Anerley members can participate if they are fast enough. Mark H has details.
  • Social events: Christmas dinner at the Toby carvery on Tuesday 17th December at midday. Christmas party at Belinda’s house, 21st December, 8pm bring a bottle and plate. Address tbc in the Bugle at a later date
  • Bike maintenance – Meike offered up her garage and John’s tools to facilitate bike maintenance sessions. It was discussed that 4 or 5 members could attend with Des and/or Vince leading the sessions and Meike supplying tea and coffee. Des and Vince to discuss this and inform members via the Bugle.
  • Ride leaders should let Stuart know if a ride will be going off road so that it can be advertised in the Bugle.
  • Tina offered to do another first aid trauma class if there were at least 8 people.

INSURANCE

We know we should really have it, but getting around to it is a chore. Once done he renewal can happen automatically. So if you are not covered third party now is the time to do it now. Remember it is now mandatory for club rides for many good reasons both for you and your fellow riders.

The best deal may depend on your age and other affiliations. Most of us are covered through membership of one of the three main cycling organisations:

CTC (Cycling UK): The club is affiliated to Cycling UK which means you can get associated membership with inclusive insurance at a discounted rate - currently £26 quoting Anerley BC code 9101625:
https://shop.cyclinguk.org/membership/affiliate-membership-myself

British Cycling: Membership including insurance from £37:
https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership

London Cycling Campaign (LCC): Membership including insurance £49 (£25 concessions):
https://membership.lcc.org.uk/

When you renew your club membership we may be collecting your CTC/BC/LCC membership number as proof.

DON'T GET DOORED IN NEW YORK

First (above, click to play) Domino's Delivery Man doored in Manhattan, November 25, 2019. So bad the paramedics had to carry him away. But not before New York's finest put aside pity and enforced the law on the prone victim by ticketing him (below, click to play) for not cycling in a cycle lane.

Next, the paramedics for jaywalking ;-)

But, of course, if he has got third party insurance he won't have to worry about being sued for a new door ...  (Thanks to TomTom for the link)

GPX DOWNLOADS

A new feature on our Club website menu (https://anerleybc.org) is an easy link to all our GPX dowloads. Click on that (or a subset from the submenu) and all the relevant loads are shown. There are approaching 150 of them covering many of our Sunday and Tuesday Rides since 2017.

Click on any and at the bottom of each ride report you should see something like this. Click on the Download link and it should do just that. Then edit, bung it into your Garmin or whatever. Enjoy!

MAKE SUVs EXTINCT

Frank was shocked to read this article which he would ike to share with you. Except it's behind The Times paywall so you can't.

The point was SUVs are the second-largest contributor to the increase in global CO2 emissions since 2010!
    * 1. Power
    * 2. SUVs
    * 3. Heavy Industry
    * 4. Trucks
    * 5. Aviation [ inc private jets Harry etc]
    * 6. Shipping.

    * As cyclists we are ALL breathing in all this pollution. Robert has his mask. He shouldn't even have to consider using one. So, hopefully, when you come to replace your four wheels you will seriously consider going electric.

If I can get to Scotland and back in one - anyone can.
