QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"It's the triumph of a whole country, not only mine" - Egan Bernal

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

It was incredible. This morning, we look at Egan Bernal and he is just 22 years old. He won the Tour de France. He was a junior a few years ago and he just won the Tour de France. I think it is great. It is great for cycling.

This year it was a super Tour de France. I'm French but it is good that the Frenchman were really good with a good battle for all the teams. It was a great Tour de France. A few people said that in the last 20 or 30 years, it was the most exciting Tour. The last few days were a small group of four or five guys with small gaps. - Nico Portal (Team director)

TOURING BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Maybe not a Tour de France contender but Pilgrim is the chosen steed of the Anerley's most adventurous tourists somewhere between here and Instanbul.

This model, which keen eyes will spot was photographed outside their Westhumble Station shop, is the ‘Northdown’  full touring build from £2,245. More for credit card than camping tourists maybe? Great handlebars!

TOUR DE LES COLLINES SURREY ET LONDRES CENTRALE

Yep - it's the Prudential weekend again. I haven't heard of any club members do the 160km or so sprint. Good luck if I have missed you. Please send photos for next week's edition.

Also a warning - if you plan to take a car or rely on surface transport in Central London - forget it! Blame Pete, Roger and hundreds of others marshalling tens of thousands from around London and beyond to the closed street Freecycle event.

All the info here: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/

MEANWHILE AT A VELODROME NOT FAR AWAY

Burbage Road, SE24 9HE if you haven't been before. A chance to find the bits you need at less than shop prices. And stuff you can't find in shops. 10am to 1pm Saturday (3rd). There will action on the track .... so it all adds to the entertainment.

Can't make Herene Hill tomorrow? TomTom found this site with details of upcoming jumbles around the UK. Enjoy!  http://www.bikejumbles.co.uk

LYNTON CROSBY: ENEMY OF THE CYCLIST?

The man behind some of most notorious Conservative Party campaigns and a master of the dark arts of deceiving Facebook campaigns. This week The Guardian did an investigation into how his company is subverting supposed Facebook controls to creat fake 'independent' information sites paid for by dodgy political organisations.

In doing so they came across two involving cycling in London. One apparently supportive, the other definitely not. First the anti-cyclist

This play on Transport for London seeks to rip up the new Thames Embankment Cycleway. It was apparently done for the owners of Canary Wharf. They believe the cycleway seriously inhibits taxis getting people to their little goldmine fast enough.

The other campaign was 'Square Mile Cycling' advocating for more cycling infrastucture in the City of London. Following the logic above this would be to screw up their competitor as the centre of London's financial district. Ho-Hum. BEST IPHONE/ANDROID CYCLING APPS

TomTom found this guide to not less than 26 of them: https://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/211078-26-best-smartphone-cycling-apps-iphone-android-and-more

I just use:

  • OSMAnd for turn by turn navigation
  • GPX Viewer for checking 'on track' when someone else is leading
  • Endomondo for tracking GPX routes (whiich I post onto ride reports
Plus
  • Viking GPX for editing tracks on any PC
If you are having a 'Garmin Moment' as Pete did last Sunday - your smartphone is your saviour.

FINALLY: BOTTOMS UP!

The lowlight of this year's Tour was this gentleman 'mooning' the cyclists. At least he got a slap on the bum from a passing Bahrain-Merida rider. Cheeky!
