QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"To prepare for a race there is nothing better than a good pheasant, some champagne and a woman" - Jacques Anquetil

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Jacques Anquetil's rather indulgent race preparations led him to be the first five times winner of the Tour de France between 1957 and 1964.

His victories in stage races such as the Tour were built on an exceptional ability to ride alone against the clock in individual time trial stages, which lent him the name "Monsieur Chrono".

Nowadays when Tour contestents are prisoners of scientific driven dieticians can they enjoy winning quite as much? When is progress - progress? Perhaps our TT contestents can let us on to their training techniques. Photos obligatory!

More on this legend here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Anquetil

PINK BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

The idea of a different coloured kit for our ladies went down like a pink balloon. 'Cause pink isn't reserved for the superior sex. This rider in piink is definitely a man unless I need to go to Specsavers.

The bike? Well Richard Carapaz demanded his sponsors Canyon give him a pink bike to defend his pink jersey on the Giro d'Italia. More spectacular pictures here: https://movistarteam.com/en/2019-05-30/gallery-pink-canyon-bike-giro-italia-2019-richard-carapaz

WINE OF THE WEEK

I came upon this jolly little Merlot last week in an Irish supermarket. Very nice is was too. Perhaps I should take Jaques' advice and sample a few more to improve my performance!

Also available in London from your local supermarket or delivered by Ocado from just £6: https://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Cono-Sur-Bicicleta-Merlot/231042011

It should fit a standard bottle cage ...

INJURY OF THE WEEK

This is Ewa's leg if you didn't recognise it.  She had to  curtail her walking holiday wihen she broke her ankle broke in 2/3 places requiring surgery back in Croydon.

No idea when when Ewa will be able to ride but its good to see Denise is making a good recovery from her broken hip and is back on Tuesday rides. Looks like walking and ski-ing are the real danger sports for club members!

FINALLY: CLAIMING CYCLE EXPENSES

You may know that HMRC and your employer will allow 45p mileage allowance for using your car. Some of us think that a tad generous. But then perhaps our understanding of the true expense of driving is understated.

But what if you use your bike? Then it's 20p a mile. One MP got a load of opprobrium for doing just that:

Or he should have used his car? Charged the taxpayer an extra 25p a mile causing more congestion and pollution?

Surely only the hateful Daily Mail could dredge up such a story to appear to a prejudiced audience? The best protest is to switch to your bike and charge it to expenses @ 20p/mile as a civic duty.

Happy Cycling in Flaming June!

[From Stuart who will be cycling The Netherlands with TomTom next week. Tom V will be back in the chair - except i haven't told him that yet!]
