QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“A bicycle ride is a flight from sadness.” - James E. Starrs

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Brian has been a stalwart of the club. The Treasurer, membership secretary and purveyor of club kit. The complete low key, behind the scenes member that keeps a club working. Oh, and a pretty fast and fearsome cyclist too!

But for not much longer. The Kent Alps are no longer sufficient for Brian. He will be off in the New Year to Whitehaven which has the even more challenging Lake District peaks. So farewell Brian ...

Which leaves a huge hole in the club. So if you are good with numbers or people or anything please seriously think about volunteering to do the job - or part of it. If you can't - you can at least point the finger at someone who can.

Either way we need a decision at the upcoming AGM (see below)

BIKE OF THE WEEK

Introducing Skippy . Rescued from its namesake, cleaned and oiled by Barrie made its debut appearance on Tuesday's Ride.

Not your normal Anerley Club bike where no off-road was expected - Barrie didn't even know if the bike or him with the extra weight would make it all the way to Knole Park and back. But it did!

The wonderfully knobbly tyres were £2.50 each from Wilkos. It had been re-cabled but that was about it.  But more is to come. Egged by its performance Barry plans to re-paint it in army green ('cos he has loads of cans in his garage from doing up Landrovers). Extra enhancements suggested on the ride included a gun carrier, flamethrower to the rear and a couple of hand grenades hanging from the handlebars.

That'll see off the Addiscombe!

THE AGM: SUNDAY NOVEMBER 12TH

Not a very formal occasion but an important one. A chance to meet riders from the other day rides and even recognise each other in mufti.

Cake, ale and tea help to lubricate the occasion. Two people will be stepping down this year so it is essential we find someone to step in their shoes:

Social Secretary (was Sandra): Organises the Christmas lunch and the Annual Dinner (usually February). Plus anything else that comes to mind. You won't be alone. There will be plenty of experience and even some enthusiasm to help you find the ropes.

Treasurer & Membership Secretary (was Brian): Key tasks are collecting the membership fees, administering our bank account and drawing up the financial report for the AGM. Do we have an accountant in the club - or a partner who could do it? Please think of who could do the task or part of it.

AND DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY. ALSO MAKE BRIAN'S LIFE EASIER BY PAYING THIS MONTH'S DUES NOW. OTHERWISE NO CAKE!

ANNUAL DOWNHILL COMPETITION

Is also run on the same day as the AGM so you can get home in time to change into civvies. There is one rule - you mustn't pedal. So its an opportunity for all. Indeed some say the more weight you carry the better. The key is nerve on the bends.

If you haven't done it before then check out the 2015 edition here: https://anerleybc.org/freewheel-competition-8th-november-2015/

CROYDON HIGH STREET CLOSURE

If you use the north-south cycle route through Croydon town centre you may be in for a shock. The ever cycle friendly Croydon Council are shutting part of the route without consultation and at very short notice to all vehicles. They don't mention cycles 'cos I guess they, as usual, forget about them.

Its part of the council's plan to bring more nightlife to the town as though the bodies on a Sunday morning I have to cycle around are not enough. This from the people who ripped out the cycle lane to create more car parking with dangerous curbs at the South end of the High Street. The bit that's affected is between Park Street and Katherine Street. It also means moving bus stops and taxi ranks.

Not everybody is pleased including this person: https://insidecroydon.com/2017/08/22/watsons-latest-whim-will-see-high-street-closed-to-traffic/

Want to get those legs pumping - but without have to ride. Bob B tells me this is a sort of DJ experience and cycle event. Its fun. Its a chance to see the inside of the Olympic Velodrome and some proper cyclists. Its a six day event 24-29 October so there is no excuse ...
