QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Goodbye Brad, missed you at the Tour and Vuelta. NOT! I so nailed you with my book. I killed your last chances to ever ride a grand tour. Watching you beg in the press was fun, it really was." - Chris Froome (ex-room mate)

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Not the most popular cyclist in the world but now within spotting distance of becoming the greatest. So well done Chris on nailing your fourth Tour de France. Here is some other clues as to why Chris Froome is probably Britain's least loved great sportsman: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/40692045

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Returning from a Tuesday Ride I encountered a funeral procession in Eden Park. Not the usual black hearse but a PINK one! Plus the mourners were in a pink stretch too. I was too surprised to notice if they were wearing pink.

So what about a bicycle hearse?  Four wheels are better than two as are four riders instead of one. So i give you the double-tandem-hearsemobile. Available now from your local Co-op: http://www.co-operativefuneralcare.co.uk/arranging-a-funeral/organising-the-day/hearses/tandem-cycle-hearse/

ADDISCOMBE 10 MILE TIME TRIAL LAST SATURDAY - NOT

It was cancelled - but not because of the appalling weather. The police decided the A24 roadworks made it too dangerous. Dunno if Addiscombe can re-schedule it. Its a busy season.

Commiserations to:
Denise B
David Go

RIDELONDON THIS SUNDAY 30TH

Best wishes and good luck to all our Anerley participants. I don't have a list but I do know Jim M is setting out to do the 100 in 5 hours which would be an awesome achievement - and one that could do easily be thwarted by the delays from fallen riders.

Ride safe - and let me know how it goes. Info: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/

CYCLING FOR BEGINNERS

Sunday may be a day for hardy centurions to do their bit up the Surrey Hills - but Saturday is an opportunity for getting people cycling. For those who just don't like traffic or just want to enjoy the sights of our capital - there is FREECYCLE (part of the RideLondon weekend). The traffic free eight-mile circuit passes iconic London landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England and again goes south of the river with a loop over Waterloo Bridge, offering stunning views of London.  More here: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/
See also Pete's Saturday Ride below.

UPCOMING RIDES

Saturday Ride 29th July: 08:45 Shurguard/501 Brighton Road: Pete S writes - this Saturday we've been asked to lead and marshall a ride from East Croydon to Parliament square in time for the London Freecycle event. It will be a family ride with mixed style of bikes and abilities so it won't be quick! 40 riders are signed up for it, so I've been told to expect 30 or so.

The route is 15.8 miles to London then around another 10 around london's scenic spots, with a return ride leaving London at 2.30 so back at 4 - 4.30 and a total of just over 40 miles.

I've been asked to be the leader, Roger is a marshal and it would be great if any others would like to join us. It will be a good opportunity to fly the Anerley colours. I'm told there is also a not very exciting but free packed lunch available from the marshall's tent in Green park.

Anyone interested please let me know. NB Earlier than usual 8.45 am start

Sunday Ride 23rd July: 09:00 Shurguard/501 Brighton Road: Tom V leads to Tea at Agoea, East Grinstead with a pub stop at the Half Moon Inn, Balcombe.

Tuesday Ride 1st August:
'A' Ride [12mph] 09:30 Shurguard/501 Brighton Road: Tom V leads to New House Farm, Near Faygate
'B' Ride [10mph] 10:00 Shurguard/501 Brighton Road: Des D leads to New House Farm, Near Faygate

Thursday Ride: 3rd August: 10:00 Shurguard/501 Brighton Road: Mark H leads somewhere. Probably east.

FINALLY

Maybe you have been living under a stone this week and missed the incredible Fergus Beeley road rage video here. An outtburst that has wrested the crown of the most loony driver of the road from the infamous "Do you know who I am - Ronnie Pickering!". But it isn't these sad and pitiful characters I'm picking out. Fergus Beeley's nemesis is the most Zen like character imaginable. He doesn't react even when Fergus manhandles him and tells him he is about to die.

Most of the public reaction admires the guy's restraint. However, there is a significant amount of opinion in forums discussing the incident who are critical. "Get a pair of balls" & "I would have floored Fergus" typifies their reaction. Given the police were on their way and Fergus was only a witness and not involved in the original incident on the M27 - would it have done any good or more harm.

Something to think about next time we get a crazy bawling us out.

Happy Cycling!
