QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"You only need three gears: one with the wind, one for a cross wind and one into the wind"
[Dutch cycling proverb]

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Your favourite 'All-Upper' looks mighty content - as he should be. TomTom claimed a lifetime distance record on Monday. The 235km Fietselfstedentocht tour of 11 Dutch cities plus riding to/from the hostel made 171 miles on the day.

It may have been perfectly flat apart from the occasional ascent of a dyke or a canal bridge but the wind was horrific and the first 30% was punching into the the same rainstorm that was flooding Britain.

PEOPLE CARRIERS OF THE WEEK

This is how the Dutch used to transport people (presumably to their graves). Pictured rusting away outside a hotel in Hippolytushoef.

Time have changed and this is the latest in cool 'people-carriers' spotted a few miles away:

Powered by a Bosch electric motor and 5000 euros from your bank account - this is a smooth solution to family transportation. More gorgeous pictures and info here: https://www.urbanarrow.com/en/family

And do put it in your diary ....

MEANWHILE THIS WEEKEND AT HERNE HILL

The Big Velofete is a big new fundraising event for the Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome. It is a weekend long event with races and activities organised by the many wonderful user groups that make up the HHV Community.

Throughout the weekend they will have entertainment provided by race events from right across the spectrum of cycling and beyond. They will play host to road racing, track racing, sprinting, road bike criteriums, fixed gear criteriums, cyclocross, duathlon, cross country running and drag sprints. There will be a little bit of everything with competitions featuring people from throughout our racing community; men and women, young and old.

If that’s not enough, there’s plenty of ways for spectators to get involved with numerous ‘have a go’ activities throughout the weekend as well as exhibitions, talks, signings and stalls. We’ll also have plenty of food and drink on offer to keep you fed and watered throughout the weekend.

Everyone’s welcome, there really is something for all!

DID YOU KNOW IT'S BIKE WEEK TOO?

CTC's doomed attempt to turn th e UK into a Dutch style culture surrounded by mini-Holland schemes?

The Netherlands may have a higher car ownership than the UK but 15,000 cyclists this week's Dutch event ruled the roads - as they do every day. Except bicycles pretty much have their own roads (fietspads) and undoubted priority over motor vehicles where they both share.

It's pretty clear the UK has, so far, an unbroken cultural issues over bicycles. But being British Bicyclists we can at least try: https://www.cyclinguk.org/bikeweek

FINALLY

Des writes:

I have been asked by several of our newer club members, about suggestions for a first foreign tour. My first bike tour was with John Turnbull and Meike, and you can't do better than follow the advise and example that they passed on to me! Their recommendation for lots of reasons was a circular tour along the riverside cycle routes of the Rivers Moselle and the Rhine in Germany. You can read about some of the reasons why, here https://anerleybc.org/let-the-train-take-the-strain/
