No, contrary to Anerley legend this is not our forbears in front of The Crown, Selsey. We proved that a couple of weeks ago. The windows and door behind is all wrong. But where is it?
Des, our club archivist has been busy re-examining the provence of the photo's attribution. This is what he as come up with:
G.H. Smith supplied the photo and told us it was the pub used by the Anerley men. In this Gazette item he is referring back to the old days and the club's earliest visits. He goes on to say how (in 1914) it has changed.
For instance - the pubs. There are two that the Anerley used to have experience of, "The Crown" and "The Fisherman's Joy". The Crown was our first love, and it is unaltered as far as appearances go, except that next door, there is of all things - a cinema."
He goes on to refer to the photo taken outside the Crown "25 years earlier." He explains a copy of this photo adorns the wall of the ex-President's room. The next bit might solve the mystery. He goes on to say "that a similar group photo outside the Fisherman's Joy adorns the wall of the present President's room. The latter inn appears to be quite unaltered"
Could G.H, another 16+ years later, when writing our club's "memories of members" up to 1931, have mixed up his memories and got the two pubs mixed up?
I think he did. 'The Fisherman's Joy' is still there in Selsey and here it is on Google Streetview:
