QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Such historians as record the tides of social manners and morals, have neglected the bicycle. Yet would it be difficult to deny that [the bicycle] has been responsible for more movement in manners and morals than anything since Charles the Second … Under its influence, wholly or in part, have wilted chaperons, long and narrow skirts, tight corsets, hair that would come down, black stockings, thick ankles, large hats, prudery and fear of the dark; under its influence, wholly or in part, have bloomed week-ends, strong nerves, strong legs, strong language, knickers, knowledge of make and shape, knowledge of woods and pastures, equality of sex, good digestion and professional occupation.” - John Galsworthy in 1930

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

T'is George modelling the new edition of the Anerley strip now being circulated to the more affluent members of the club. 1881 just got bigger and it also sports an intriguing acronym. What does AKUMA stand for?

More appropriate suggestions than 'A Kick Up My A**E' would be very welcome!

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

"My other bike is a Ferrari". Well quad-cycle and its a Fahrradi. Its a tad slow unless you are on steroids and heading down Toys Hill. Yep this is a mad, man-powered superbike. It boasts an 11-speed hub gearbox, 200 ultra-bright LEDs for evening cycling, and the coolest feature: a built-in butterfly mechanism that causes the wing doors to lightly flap while pedaling.

THE SELSEY PUB MYSTERIES - ACT 2

No, contrary to Anerley legend this is not our forbears in front of The Crown, Selsey. We proved that a couple of weeks ago. The windows and door behind is all wrong. But where is it?

Des, our club archivist has been busy re-examining the provence of the photo's attribution. This is what he as come up with:

G.H. Smith supplied the photo and told us it was the pub used by the Anerley men. In this Gazette item he is referring back to the old days and the club's earliest visits. He goes on to say how (in 1914) it has changed.

For instance - the pubs. There are two that the Anerley used to have experience of, "The Crown" and "The Fisherman's Joy". The Crown was our first love, and it is unaltered as far as appearances go, except that next door, there is of all things - a cinema."

He goes on to refer to the photo taken outside the Crown "25 years earlier."  He  explains a copy of this photo adorns the wall of the ex-President's room. The next bit might solve the mystery. He goes on to say "that a similar group photo outside the Fisherman's Joy  adorns the wall of the present President's room. The latter inn appears to be quite unaltered"

Could G.H, another 16+ years later, when writing our club's "memories of members" up to 1931, have mixed up his memories and got the two pubs mixed up?

I think he did. 'The Fisherman's Joy' is still there in Selsey and here it is on Google Streetview:

It has the two windows (unlike The Crown) on the right which match up with the original photo and the markings of where the door was though the adjoining building has vanished.

We know need to play Act 3 of this drama. A long Sunday Ride to two pubs in Sussex. What could possibly go wrong? Watch this space for upcoming arrangements.
