QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“I get paid to hurt other people, how good is that?” - Jens Voigt, former pro cyclist

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

Tuesday's leader Pete R brags he cycles furthest [7 miles] to our traditional start point. But he was beaten not by a mile, but by around four hundred of them this week!

It was a surprise and a joy to see our late Treasurer Brian who had, with a few YHA stops, cycle down from his new abode in Whitehaven to join us for what must have seemed a patsy ride around Kent of less than 50 miles and never getting above the snow line.

He was en route to a tour of France. Bon voyage Brian!

BICYCLE  OF THE WEEK

No exotic or queer bike this week - but a practical option for folks who would like the exoticsm but don't have the budget to get one.

This Giant Defy Advance 1 at an RRP of £1,849 offers you a carbon fibre frameset, designed to provide a comfortable ride, with a Shimano Ultegra groupset. For 2017, Giant upgraded the brakes to Shimano hydraulics, a significant improvement over the previous mechanical discs, and that spec carries over for 2018.

Handily finished in an Anerley compatible colour scheme the Defy is classed as an endurance/sportive model making it ideal for our Club rides.

Any more recommendations in the £1500 to £2500 mid range?

WORLD BICYCLE DAY

Frank wrote to remind us it was World Bicycle Day last Sunday. Yep, we missed it. This United Nations sponsored event needs to get its publicity machine into a higher gear.

Or perhaps we are not the target. Getting motorists back into the saddle is a hard and long task. Stopping many in the developing world from going the other way may save a lot of future grief.

Acknowledging the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health, the General Assembly decided to declare 3 June World Bicycle Day.

Mind you unknowingly on that day The Anerley was doing its bit:

* The Sunday Ride put more than 50 miles behind them to penetrate as far south as Ardingly
* The Tour de Norfolk detachment also engulfed Cambridgeshire & Lincolnshire
* The Picos de Europa were still trying to get above the cloud level to see some Spanish sun

We have yet to hear from our Norfolk contingent but here are some photos smuggled back from the Compestella Crowd [add your own captions]:

Full report, hopefully, shortly and one of those guys is currently in the frame as next week's bicyclist of the week ...

HELMETS - AGAIN!

Last week I featured a video that wasn't too keen on helmets. But here's a reason to get one - Frank's back on the road and this is the one to spot him in! Yep, a KASK Valegro jobby @ £169 [Wiggle]. The Tuesdays should take cover - he plans to be joining you real soon.

There is good and bad news about cycling casulties. Statistically there has been, over time, a decrease in fatalities. There is a suspicion that this is not linked to actual crashes but the improvment in first responder treatment. In other words we are now saving cyclists who would have died a few years ago. Certainly Frank can attest to the extraordinary care that was available to him on the ground and in the air.

There is, however, a rise in serious injuries. A small part of this may be the displacement from deaths. But not all. Here is a Daily Telegraph report from eighteen months ago that speculates on the basis of injuries seen by surgeons that SPEED KILLS [or seriously injure] is as true for cyclists as for drivers. And we are going faster.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/thinking-man/crash-bang-mamils-serious-injuries-rise-among-cyclists/

Lighter, more agile bikes combined with Strava and its ilk urging us on to even faster PBs - even on the commute home - is pushing up average road speeds. A fit cyclist on a decent bike can cruise at 25 mph. And if and when one becomes a cropper it is instructive to remember  that helmets are designed for the more mundane top speed of just 12 mph.

In other words they won't help much if you dismount at these higher speeds whether you paid £169 or not. So take care. Skill, awareness and luck - not safety gear - are your first defences against injury.

JOHN T

Members will be sadddened to hear that John has been re-admitted to Mayday Hospital. He was discharged last week but after spending just one night at home he had to return with serious infections. I'm sure everyone here will feel deeply for Meike and her family for having their hopes dashed.

Meike was asking for help in the garden and with shopping. Drop her a line if you can help in any way.

FINALLY

Another week - another tour. On Monday a bunch of Anerley Gals are off to Belgium and to the Manheim Gate in Ypres. A true place of pilgrimage where the town firefighters have sounded the Last Post every night for those that gave their lives in the Great War.
