QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“It was eleven more than necessary.” – Jacques Anquetil, 5-time winner of the Tour de France, after winning a race by twelve seconds.

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

A big welcome to Michael who wasn't put off by his first ride with the Anerley - and came back for a second on Tuesday. Only 33% a cyclist as he is a triathalon man at heart. Hope we see you again real soon.

Next week's Bicyclist of the Week will be the Giro d'Italia winner. Until this morning it looked like a dead cert for Simon Yates. Today Chris Froome reversed the pundits predictions by putting an incredible 38 minutes between him and Simon to put him in pink and Simon in history. Chris has 40 seconds on second place Dutchman Tom Dumoulin so it isn't sewn up yet. Tomorrow will probably decide. Sunday is the final result. BICYCLES  OF THE WEEK

Two that are not technically bicycles but who cares? The Tuesday ride this week had the incredible luck of stumbling into a 'Wheels for Wellbeing' session at the Croydon Arena. A dozen or so severely disabled folk where having a whale of a time spinning around the circuit in an interesting collection of cycles with a random number of wheels.

Just to prove that cycling can be fun for everyone!

MORE ANERLEY HISTORY

The picture above has evocations of the 'Wheels of Wellbeing' bikes of today being ridden by Anerley's finest nearly 130 years ago. At a time when that also meant Britain's best. It is believed to be probably a photo taken around the time the two Anerley B.C riders set a new record the 100 miles on a Tricycle.

Another part of our Anerley History, this is not mentioned in the 1881-1981 history of the club. An article in the present issue of the magazine of the Veteran Cycling Club the ‘Boneshaker’ relates how S.F.Edge was appointed Secretary of the club in 1887, he was still a teenager being either 18 or 19 years of age.

That year Edge won the first Westerham Hill Climb (soon to be come the famous Catford Hill climb) said to be the oldest continuous cycle race in the world.

S.F.Edge was living at 80 Belverdere Road Anerley Upper Norwood at that time. Here is a photo S.F.Edge prior to world 24 hour record at Brooklands track in 1907.

He was also a triathelete before triathalons had been invented. Because, not only did he race yachts, his company built them:

More Marshalls needed. If you can spare a few hous for a good cause contact John D or Tom V.

PURLEY - PARIS - PURLEY [THE PPP]

Not quite the Paris - Brest - Paris but much more fun and open to everyone. From the Purley Gyratory to the Arc de Triomphe roundabout [even more scary] and back. But the bits in between are pure heaven.

Our plan for an autumn tour to commemorate Anerley Capt'n Montague's brother's death in Rouen on September 28th 1918 is taking shape. Its a ride of three days to six depending on which bits you want to do. And it will be done at an easy pace where the wine, cheese and scenery will be as important as the cycling.

The full monty would be:

Day 1 (27/9): Purley-Newhaven ~ 50 miles fairly flat. Take overnight ferry.
Day 2 (28/9): Dieppe-Rouen ~ 40 easy miles arriving for lunch. Afternoon free.
Day 3 (29/9): Rouen-Mantes-le-Jolie ~ 60 flat miles
Day 4 (30/9): Mantes-le-Jolie-Paris - 35 flat miles arriving for lunch

The choice of catching an evening Eurostar home or riding/training back to Mantes-le-Jolie.

Day 5 (1/10) Mantes-le-Jolie to Saint-Saens via Gisors ~ 60 easy miles
Day 6 (2/10) Saint Saen-Dieppe-Newhaven train home ~ 25 downhill miles

Only have two days off work? Catch the 27/9 after work train to join us in Newhaven.

Sharing rooms it should work out at around £20/25 per night plus another £25 for the ferry. Eurostar is usually £58 plus £20 for a bike.

I'm looking for a compact but friendly group of 4 to 8 riders to enjoy this. I'll get into serious planning after my Normandy trip in July but please express your interest if you have not already done so.

Stuart

FINALLY

Couple of weeks ago the mayor was proud to announce the Silvertown Tunnel - to relieve the pressure on the Blackwall tunnel. Blackwell is banned to cyclists - though I do know of one man who has cycled it.

So will the Silvertown have cycling provision? Well, its not [surprise, surprise] part of the plan. Under pressure TfL has suggested they may 'experiment' with a cycle carrier that could use the bus lane. Probably a bit like the unsatisfactory arrangement for the Dartford Crossing.

This in a city that is, supposedly, trying to shift the major modal of traffic from car to bike - and has succeeded in Central London. But in South East London - eat your heart out.

Here is how the Dutch really take cycling seriously. They built a tunnel to take a motorway under the Rhine. So, of course they built another tunnel alongside just for cyclists. And, at either end give them a choice of taking an escalator or lift back to ground level. Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7_TxZDUk48

FINALLY, FINALLY

We have for GDPR day published a privacy policy. Frankly, doing York Hill on a fixie is more fun.
