BICYCLIST AND BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

How to do a downhill on a fixie!

Spotted on the London Brighton Veteran Car Rally last Sunday somewhere south of Redhill. This unknown hero cycled all the way to Brighton on his 'boneshaker'. These were all the rage in the 1860/70s. They featured the new fangled pedal, solid wheels and metal tyres. Hence a very rough and noisy ride - but no punctures!

Velocipede builders gradually increased the size of the front wheel to give a higher 'gear' so they could go faster and the boneshaker evolved into the 'ordinary' better known as the penny farthing. These machines were the first to be called 'bicycles'.

Hence bicycle clubs and the Anerley.

FINALLY

Last Sunday's alternate ride joined the Veteran Car Run at Redhill and bagged the better weather from Tom as we raced down the A23 and onto fast dual carriageways we wouldn't dare normally touch. But tucked in behind a Pierce or a Packhard it was only unburnt fuel that was the only hazard.

The official route had been changed from Brighton Road (passed our start point) due to roadworks in Tooting. It now went through Banstead and down Reigate Hill. A decision that led to a disaster. It is believed the brakes failed on a 1902 Benz and it ran out of control finally smashing into two modern day cars and appears to be totally destroyed.

All six passengers were injured, two seriously of which one has subsequently died. Club members know well the dangers of that descent. I don't think any cyclists would have taken heavy old cars without efficient brakes down that slope. A fatal decision.

Ride with care please. Especially downhill.
