QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“The best rides are the ones where you bite off much more than you can chew, and live through it” – Doug Bradbury

BICYCLIST & BUGLER OF THE WEEK

Why? Well he leads two rides a week. That's two days out of his life plus all the planning, constructing GPX tracks and finding new mountains to conquer. Plus the pressure of trying to herd the Anerley into a coherent organised group. Ok, that's still a work in progress (since 1881).

Oh, and having the driest sense of humour this side of the Purley Gates.

But the main reason is, despite all that, he is going to find even more time to compile next week's Bugle while I and two others from the club enjoy a week cycling France. So - all news and reports to Mark V please. TIA.

BICYCLE  OF THE WEEK

Another variation on the tandem theme dedicated to buttock-hating stokers. Side by side?

Two too few? On the left you can just discern a green 7 seater. Six (three each side) pedal a central shaft with a rider at the back with a proper steering wheel. Pictured at a crazy Belgian bicycle museum & workshop this summer

TURNBULL TOURS: INDIA 1995

The fifth in John's series of global adventures this time accompanied by John D. They do Delhi, the Himalayas, fight off elephants, chase tigers, blessed by gurus, kissed by maidens and even take time to have a puncture: https://anerleybc.org/turnbull-tours-india-1995/

THE SATURDAYS RAISE £400 FOR WHIZZ-KIDZ

Pete S writes:
A special thank you to all the Anerley riders who took part in and helped Marshal the London Prudential Free ride cycle from Croydon on 29th July. Thanks to your efforts we have raised and donated £400 to help Whiz Kids provide mobility equipment to disabled children and young people.

GROWING OLD DISGRACEFULLY

Did you know Agde  & Anji were really 93 & 94?

Well not quite but cycling does really stop you ageing. A couple of my friends of a certain vintage were involved in a study at Kings College on the effect of cycling for a group of 55 to 79 year olds. They found that many had levels of physiological function that would place them at a much younger age compared to the general population; debunking the common assumption that ageing automatically makes you more frail.

They also found that people of different ages within the study group could have similar levels of function such as muscle strength, lung power and exercise capacity.

In other words outside the pages of Peter Pan - cycling is the most effective way of not (or at least dramatically reducing) ageing in your sixties and seventies.

Not that should come as a surprise to the more juvenile members of the Anerley. After a fast and hard ride across northern France we sat round a table on the ferry behaving disgracefully and added the ages of the four of us. 268 years!

Or is it you lose the ability to count? More here: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/newsevents/news/newsrecords/2015/January/Exercise-allows-you-to-age-optimally.aspx

RECENT RIDE REPORTS

Saturday Ride 2nd September: Karen reports that four had a fantastic ride out to Pooh Corner in Hartfield. Alice, John Mark B and Karen. Alice took advantage of the train back from Edenbridge whilst the others carried on via Oxted and Marden Park. 67 miles in total at 13 mph average.

Sunday Ride 3rd September: We find a new hostelry (above) to the Anerley roster of places to eat and drink in Surrey. The faster people with things to do had already left us on our return from the Conservatory at Horsham: https://anerleybc.org/sunday-ride-3rd-september-2017/

Tuesday Ride 5th September: Meike reported that it was rather damp returning from Edenbridge - and John and herself were in their car. No other report.
