QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. Teach a man to cycle and he will realize fishing is stupid and boring" - Desmond Tutu

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Alexander Kristoff wins RideLondon-Surrey Classic in sprint finish. Life begins (or just gets better) at 30 for the Norwegian professional. The Grauniad report is here: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/jul/30/alexander-kristoff-wins-ridelondon-surrey-classic-sprint-finish

Here was some of the keen competition from nearer home - plus young Jim M put on a very creditible 06:44:05 for the 100 miles. Check out other times here: http://results.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/2017/

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Looking for something different? Fed up with steel, aluminium, carbon and titanium? Try calcium and ride a cow inspired art installation. This won a $25,000 dollar prize which the rider planned to fund a project to educate people about cruelty to farm animals. TURNBULL TOURS: JAPAN 1984

The fourth in the series of John's intrepid world trips. This time he takes Meike from Tokyo to Mount Fuji and much more. Oh, and speaks Japanese in his own inscrutable way. No geisha's were harmed on this expedition: https://anerleybc.org/turnbull-tours-japan-1984/

ANERLEY LADIES TOUR TO CANTERBURY & WHITSTABLE

Returning Wednesday and using their seductive charms to get through roadworks. The full story and slideshow: https://anerleybc.org/tuesday-ladies-on-tour-to-canterbury-and-whitstable/

RECENT RIDE REPORTS

Saturday Ride 28th July: 38 riders were being marshalled by these four tough guys (and guyesses): https://anerleybc.org/saturday-ride-28th-july-2017/

Sunday Ride 29th July: I stood in for Tom for this Balcombe ride which went a bit pear shaped. We had to turn round when we hot the A22 road closure. The backend decided to turn off in Lingfield and the leaders rear hanger bent itself into oblivion on the hill into East Grinstead. A bleeding knee and a long walk to the station for one.

Tuesday Ride 1st August: Des & Pete went to a new destination in Fay gate to watch a bit of haycutting and getting in a good 50 miler in perfect conditions. Two reports for the price of one here: https://anerleybc.org/tuesday-ride-1st-august-2017/

FINALLY

Des writes: With so many people now taking up cycling and joining our bike club, it might be useful to provide them with some useful, and perhaps even essential, info on bike maintenance.
A bit of knowledge on how to fix a problem can save you from a long walk home!

There is a useful, weekly, series running on this very subject, so well worth a read.

For Part 1 start here: https://www.roadbikerider.com/tech-gear/tech-columns/tech-talk/3000-bike-maintenance-101-part-1

And Part 2 is here  https://www.roadbikerider.com/latest-rbr-newsletter-2017/290-issue-no-772/3003-bike-maintenance-101-part-2

A very worthwhile investment for reference, is this excellent book. Mine is now nearly 20 years old, well thumbed with greasy hands, and regularly used when I have forgotten which way to tweak the many adjusting screws on Shimano gears. The book is worth every penny!

Happy Cycling!
