QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Cycling is possibly the greatest and most pleasurable form of transport ever invented. Its like walking only with one-tenth of the effort” - Daniel Pemberton

BICYCLE CARRIER OF THE WEEK

Last week we featured a thief attempting to liberate a bike from a car rear carrier. Well here is the solution. Put your bike on the roof! Mind you tealeaves might be more interested in liberating the Lamborghini underneath.

Spotted and snapped by Bob B at the very damp Tour Series Croydon last week. Some teams have too much dosh!

BTW The TourSeries Croydon results are here: http://www.tourseries.co.uk/results/15506.php

BICYCLE CLUB OF THE WEEK - DUTCH STYLE

We like to claim The Anerley is the oldest UK cycling club in continuous existence. But it looks like the UK was late to the party. We had a post on our history page from Immer Weiter in North Holland pointing out they beat us by 10 years - 1871.

Henricus Burgers had  founded the first Dutch bicycle factory in 1869 and sponsored the club. The old picture looks rather like the 'old' Anerley. Today's picture shows a sporty club but many, its good to note, are approaching a 'certain age'. Indeed one of their famous riders, Herman Snoeijink, who  took many national championships between 1970 and 1990, has now returned to become a world champion in his age category.

Hope for us all?

TURNBULL TOURS: DENMARK & SWEDEN 1987

Third in the series of John's famous tours around the world. The Allin gets to see Hamlet's castle, Viking houses and Hans Christian Andersen's birthplace. Oh, and the odd motorway:

LET'S PARTY!

Its 40 years since Abigail's Party and party animals have moved on. Belinda's Parties have been great ways to enjoy life off the saddle. She is thinking of hosting another Summer Party, maybe on the 1st July from 4pm, same sort of format as last year. She needs to have an idea of interest before committing.

Interested? Simply send a 'Yes please!' email to party@anerleybc.org. Enough votes and its on. Do it now: party@anerleybc.org

GOOD RIDE
Friday Night Ride from the South Bank to Shoreham-by-Sea with breakfast in the Art Deco Airport Building. June 2nd is getting near the shortest night of the year so you will be surprised how much of Sussex there is to see and enjoy without the thunder of motor traffic. Features the famous 'Shoreham Gap' which cuts through the normally challenging South Downs. Almost all downhill as, I'm sure, Maggie will testify ;-)

Admin warned be scared and scary it was - but what fun!
In search of the now pretty much unrecognisable Stane Street Roman Road via Downs Road. (nr the bottom of little Switzerland). Downs Road proved to be a bit of a misnomer to say the least. Halfway we hit the Reigate Road (B2033) and decided we had had enough rough stuff for one day. The other half saved for another day? Just tarmac next week - promise!
Warning: When Ordinance Survey says open to all traffic - ignore it!
