NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

This year's resolution is to repeat last years .:-)

  1. Get Fit/Lose Weight: These two resolutions have to be the most common in existence and they're both good things to aim for when approached with a healthy attitude, the problem is they are hopelessly vague!
  2. Remember that you reap what you sow: One of the most important thoughts to hold on to is that you'll get back what you put in. Whether it's miles in the saddle doing quality training or time and effort in preparing yourself fully for the challenges of the rides ahead, commitment to being the best rider you can be is the key.
  3. Learn to relax: Life can be stressful, so making sure you take time to relax is an important skill.
  4. Keep a healthy balance: This might not be the most popular resolution out there, but it is potentially an important one, especially if you have family commitments or a partner that isn't as into cycling as you are.
  5. Introduce someone else to cycling: Cycling is a brilliant activity whatever way you look at it. It's good for the body, good for the mind, it can improve mental and physical health, it can satisfy that competitive edge or enable a cheap and sustainable way to travel to work. Kids can do it, adults can do it, families can do it, friends can do it, couples can do it.
  6. Try a different discipline: Now, you could go fairly simple with this, with road cyclists trying mountain biking and mountain bikers trying road cycling. There are definitely benefits to mixing things up like this.
  7. Do a long distance ride: Do you know how far you can ride in one go? Or over the course of several days back-to-back? Long distance bike rides, whether you do it on a road bike, mountain bike, touring bike or your old but reliable commuter bike, can be transformative. They're an opportunity to test your limits, see how far you can travel under your own steam, and can be a test of self sufficiency depending on how you go.
  8. Do an event! Participating in a race or event can be a perfect resolution for your list. It'll give you purpose, something to train for, a date to complete it by, and if you get some friends to sign up, training partners too.
  9. Stretch it out: This is a simple resolution that will have a huge impact on your cycling if you manage to stick to it. As a repetitive form of exercise, cycling can lead to tightness in various parts of the body that over time can lead to injury.
  10. Volunteer (or donate) at a cycling charity: How about spending a little time giving back this year by helping out a cycling charity? Whether it's donating old bicycles or fixing bikes while learning maintenance skills, or spending some time leading social rides, you can give yourself a warm glow, some bike time and help others at the same time.

A MESSAGE FROM TIM & SALLY

Received as they setting off on their latest Patagonian adventure on New Year's Eve. Some things Tim suggested to put in your diaries for 2020:

22-25th May Cycle Touring Festival, near Clitheroe, Lancashire.
This is a weekend run by cyclists not for profit. Its organised by a couple who cycled around the world several years ago (Laura & Tim Moss).

Its consists of a weekend of talks, camping, planning and all things bicycle touring. It’s the place to come for anyone planning, thinking about or dreaming of a bike trip. There will be talks, workshops, drop-in sessions, practical advice and story telling.

It’s a chance to meet like-minded people and dream big over a cup of tea or a pint. You don’t need a bike or any experience. You can camp or stay at the centre's B&B (Waddow Hall).

This year they hope to concentrate on tours that are closer to home and that avoid long flights.

Sally & Tim and Julia & Tom have signed up. It would be great if others wants to join us. We went last year and found it a great event and a chance to talk to lots of interesting cycle touring enthusiasts. The tickets do go fast so don't leave it too long if you want to go.

To book tickets and learn more see https://cycletouringfestival.co.uk/

19th - 20th June York Rally
I've never actually been to this event but have heard it is good fun. It has organised rides, talks and presentations, auctions, entertainment (folk band). Its free to attend and go on most of the rides you just have to pay for the camping. If there were enough of us they do allow for clubs to have a stand to advertise their club.

To learn more and book camping see http://yorkrally.org/

3rd - 9th August CTC (now Cycle Campaigning) Birthday Rides Morton-in-Marsh, Cotswolds.
These rides are to celebrate the founding of the Cyclist's Touring Club in 1878. This is a great weekend with rides arranged every day at all levels from Treasure Hunts and Family Rides to 200km Audax's. Its great way to explore a different part of the country by bike. There's entertainment, talks and cycle jumble etc. Most people camp or find a B&B nearby. Sally & I used to go quite frequently and always enjoyed them.

Tickets aren't for sale until January but are usually cheaper the earlier you book.

FINALLY

As a cyclist we often get shouted and abused in fashions that would be regarded as racist if applied to persons of another colour instead of another transportation mode.

Is this an example of when the two come come together?
