RISKY QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Around 5%  of gardeners - compared to 4% of cyclists - were found to require medical care for an injury related to their respective activity"

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Meet 9-year old Lotta Crok - Amsterdam's junior cycling mayor. Amsterdam which has more bikes than people and 63% cycle every day is beyond dreams to any Croydon cyclist. Yet the remaining cars still threaten the well being of many - especially the young.

Lotta says: “The three biggest problems for us are cars, cycling tourists and scooters. The cars take up too much space, the tourists are always swaying side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over.”

At 'em Lotta!

OFFICE BICYCLE  OF THE WEEK

Sitting is bad for you, cycling is good for you, work doesn't have to make you do the bad thing.

This isn't training, it isn't sweat making, its just keeping the blood flowing to make you a better and fitter worker. So next time you decide to swop around your office think about throwing out the low table. Ikea do high adjustable ones like this from about £150.

This office bike was retailing at £141 but is out of stock. Indeed they are hard to find: https://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Autonomous-Office-Electronic-Bike-Black-White/17288229/product.html

However, beware of 'under-desk ' training bikes like this:

They are popular but they really don't work for many people under normal height desks. Its not just the issue of banging your knees if you have long calves but the whole posture for cycling is bad. There are issues with inducing back pain.

Better just to get a high desk and stand.

FINALLY: FAKE LONDON CYCLE NETWORK?

Boris might have pinched is eponymous bike scheme from Ken and blew a fair portion of the transport budget on ill-thought out schemes like the Garden, Bridge, Conductor buses and that areaial thing no-one uses - BUT, BUT he did have a major impact on cycling in London. It wasn't just splashing blue paint around. It was real hard infrastructure pushing back on the dominance of moto traffic.

A great deal of what wa achieved was down to his cycling czar - Andrew Gilligan. Anyone who has met him will know that whether you agree with him politically or not - he is a grade 1 cyclist. Committed, knowledgeable and can make stuff happen.

Which is why, perhaps, we should take his repor in this week's Guardian seriously that most of the current Mayor's 'achievements' in improving cycling routes in London is little less than vapourware. The claimed 140km of new structurre is actually old sstructure rebranded, a few signs and many places non-existent.

Read the report of a man who claims to have cycled it: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2019/feb/25/londons-cycle-network-overhaul-has-come-to-a-standstill

Happy Cycling!
