QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more.” – Oscar Wilde

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Jenny Graham a 38-year-old woman from Inverness has broken the record for a female cycling around the world, knocking almost three weeks off the previous record of 144 days set by Italy’s Paola Gianotti in 2014.

She cycled 15 hours a day, sometimes riding at night when the roads were quieter. Jenny managed an average of 156 miles a day, keeping an average speed of 13mph for around 12 hours a day.

Jenny said: “I just set out to see how far I could go. The furthest I’ve cycled before was from Land’s End to John O’Groats, now I have cycled right around the world.

The fastest man is Mark Beaumont in 78 days but that was fully supported. Neverthelees Scots now own both world records. More here: https://www.cyclinguk.org/press-release/cycling-uk-member-jenny-graham-smashes-round-world-cycling-record

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Elephant bike: ‘It's buy-one-give-one-free with an ethical twist’. Upcycled sturdy ex-postie bikes are delivering a better life for families in Malawi, and now the charity is using old inner tubes to create new opportunities for local crafts people, too.

The story started a few years ago when a small Staffordshire-based charity, the Krizevac Project, got its hands on a fleet of old Royal Mail postal bikes. The virtually indestructible Pashley frames were destined for the scrap heap, but were given a new lease of life in Africa.

The old bikes were stripped down and fully serviced with the help of young offenders in a local prison who were working towards passing their cycle maintenance certificates. The bikes were then shipped to Malawi where game wardens used them to ride around the perimeter fence of a black rhino sanctuary.

When you buy an Elephant bike (maybe they should have been called a Rhino bike?), the charity uses that money to donate a second bike to its social enterprise, which is also in Malawi. Owning a bike there means securing work, generating an income and getting an invaluable education.

NICE ROADS FOR PEDESTRIANS & CYCLISTS

NICE - The National Institute for Health & Care Excellence are usually concerned with whether we can afford which medicines to avoid dying. They are taking an increasing holistic view to our health and well being. On the news this morning was their plans to re-engineer our roads away from the the motor car towards walkers, riders and bus travel.

The Department of Transport (usually the enemy) said it supported such policies. Well they would, wouldn't they. But now they have a set of draft guidelines for planners and local authorities to make roads  "safe, attractive and designed" to help people use their cars less.

The consultation on these guidelines finishes at the end of the month. Catch up on this great move here:

FINALLY

Des writes:

The most common bike problem is a puncture. We all gey them at some time, so knowing how to get a tyre off is really important. But do we all know the best ways of doing it? Recently a couple of our ladies have had problems getting tyres off. Or to be more correct, the men who came to their rescue could not get the tyres off!

Not sure what brands of tyre were causing this difficulty, but I beleive a Gator tyre was one of the problem tyres.

So here is some expert advise of how to get tyres off, including problem tyres, Well worth reading because there are  best practise ways of doing it, which most of us are not aware of. I.E. Getting the tyre bead into the well of the wheel rim!
