QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

"They all look so different in clothes" - Tina (at Maggie's Party)

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

T'is Des - Anerley's very own ladies man. But he is more than that. The club's senior [very] active member who will be hitting the big eight-O in 2019. And now you can discover a little more of his childhood past in a series published by the Selsdon Gazette here: https://selsdon-residents.co.uk/selsdon-through-the-eyes-of-a-war-baby.php

More to come? Watch this space!

BICYCLE OF 1891

You may recall this was our unidentified bike of the week on the London-Brighton Veteran Car Chase. Our new Capt Mark instanty spotted it was an 1891 Overman Victor Spring-fork Safety Bicycle.

Here is one in its full glory:

Wow, and what forks they were and what a clever idea for a springy seatpost!

Overman was one of two pioneers of building the US cycle industry applying scientific techniques into both the design, manufacture and marketing of bicycles. A generation before the car industry repeated them. It was a go-to stock market idol of its time. But the bubble quickly burst and Overman went spectaculary bust in 1898.

Here's a nod to the Anerley's own strapline. And here is a link to more info and some great pictures: http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/bikes-1800s/1890-1891/1891-overman-victor-spring-fork-safety/

KATE HARRIS: LAND OF LOST BORDERS

Not quite the view from the top of Clarks Lane. But then that isn't part of the Silk Road route to Tibet and China. And we don't generally do this:

"Dressed in black with tape over their reflectors, the pair were attempting to slip through the checkpoint undetected to avoid paying for permits that would subsidise China’s occupation of Tibet. As a guard scanned his torch near their hiding spots, Harris contemplated the prospect of life in a Chinese prison – but he eventually drove off, and Harris and Yule rode like the wind towards the Tibetan Plateau, as “fear exhausted itself into euphoria”.

Tim & Sally are thinking of riding to Istanbul next year. This might be a nice 6,000 mile extension through country we know little of. Perhaps this deliightful video will inspire you to follow - or, more likley, not: https://vimeo.com/52413851

CHRISTMAS STOCKING FILLER #2

More and more competitors are knocking on Garmin's door. And if you complaint is about battery life for long rides then Lezyne has pitched for £180 of your money.

They claim 48 hours by which time you robably don't care what it says or where you are going. It's all app and PC friendly but you still have to pedal. A review here: https://road.cc/content/review/251364-lezyne-mega-xl-gps-computer
