QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

"I would just like to be able to keep up with them" - Lynn

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

A comment made on Sunday surrounded by Anerley's finest 68 to 71 year olds!

But Lynn did - finishing the 56 miles in tight formation.

A year ago she was struggling to get fit enough to do the Prudential 100. Again she did it so we can now welcome her as a club rider with a future. And an appetite ...

BICYCLE OF A GENERATION

By 1970 bicycles had become boring ... cool youngsters were entranced by Peter Fonda on his high handlebar Harley. What was poor old Raleigh in Nottingham to do?

The Chopper of course - a feat of marketing brilliance and became both an affordable homage and a cultural icon.

It was not without problems: It was less stable than a conventional bicycle and trickier to ride and not suitable for cycling long distances as it was slow and heavy, the wide tires creating significant rolling resistance. At moderate speeds it suffered speed wobbles. It could perform involuntary wheelies readily  and the position of the gear lever could also contribute to injuries sustained in a crash.

You can see them today in the Sciene Museum or, if you can find one in a skip, have it lovingly restored like the pair above: http://youngs-cycles.co.uk/bicycle-restoration/2849745

Or if you are of a certain age enjoy the original inspiration in Easyrider with the unforgettable Steppenwolf 'Born to be [helmet free] Wild'. Click on the image to watch r and enjoy:

Raleigh was the greatest bicycle company in the world at that time and saturated the market with a model [in both senses] for everyone. Mark H hasd been kind to share their 1971 catalogue here: https://anerleybc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Raleigh-Catalog-1971-UK1.pdf

Mark wondering what he has taken on as Club Captain.
