QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“The Tour does on day after day after day. It’s the only race in the world where you have to get a haircut halfway through.” – Chris Boardman

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

Des D - at the age of 79 it is no mean feat to cycle 28km up the Puerto San Glorio in heavy rain and 12km up to Lagos Covadonga also in rain. An example to us all of how to train to ride late in life.

The man behind [TomTom] added "it's the example of Des that got me up those Pico mountains".

Imperialists may note that 1609m is 5279ft - over 800ft higher than Britain's highest mountain - Ben Nevis.

BICYCLE  BRAND OF THE WEEK

Des is almost synomous with Muddy Fox. Bikes that last a long time and just get you there, comfortably and without fuss. A tough brand but not at a tough price - only the top two bikes in theiir extensive range break the £1,000 barrier.

What do other mountain climbers think of them? http://roadandmountainbikereviews.co.uk/are-muddyfox-bikes-any-good-2/

SCOTTISH MOUNTAIN BIKING

Mountain Biking higher than Ben Nevis? Well this guy didn't get so high on the Isle of Skye but he is a still a fair match for our Des. If you haven't experienced Danny Macaskill's iconic video [54 million views] - now is your chance!

SOUTH LONDON MOUNTAIN BIKING

Don't fancy the countryside? You can get some really good hill climbing practice here in London. And most of London's toughest hills are south of the river. Coming in number 4 out of 10 is our eponymous Anerley Hill leading up to Crystal Palace. Thankfully it has lost those tram tracks but then it lost the Palace itself.

Beloved of Dulwich Paragon who regularly mow me down as they reach the bottom on my way to club starts. Here is the complete collection if you would like a little challenge: https://www.broleur.com/top-ten-toughest-cycling-climbs-london-bergs/

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ...

Le Tour de Norfolk including the Tour of Cambridgeshire Sportive

Mark B's account of riding two of Britains flattest counties. Six club members ventured north to an ATM-free wilderness for five days and Mark B pipped Mark H by just four minutes in over four hours to be the lead Anerley Sportist.

Mark H's report is here: https://anerleybc.org/le-tour-de-norfolk/
