QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“I’ll tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood.” - Susan Anthony, 1896

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

Minerva, the Goddess of wisdom, war, art, schools and commerce decked out in a very fetching golden breastplate upfront. Why? Because when you have to carry the son of Ulysses magically home from Troy across the heavens - what would you use? Yep, a tandem and a rare example of a Goddess on the front and a bloke at the back.

All this while spinning around an orchestra and singing at the top of your voice to nearly two thousand people. This was the scene last Sunday evening at the Roundhouse for the final Royal Opera performance of "The Return of Ulysses' by Monteverdi. A Baroque Opera of 1640 performed not quite as Claudio may have imagined it.

CLUB DINNER NEXT SATURDAY 3RD FEB

Purley United Reformed Church, Brighton Road, Purley CR8 2LN 6:30 for 7pm. For first timers you have passed it every week as we ride up to Purley Cross. That's the church on the right. There is a car park up this alleyway which afair is free after 6:30.

Do remember to bring your own drink and a rather fetching raffle prize. Oh, and £20 for Sandra. If you haven't already booked then throw yourself at her mercy. Also don't let on to Tina that ballgowns are not, in fact, mandatory.

THREE DAY EVENTING

But on a BIKE! Steve B writes:

Further to discussions at Herne Hill velodrome, I have looked further into the proposed L'Etape Dragon 3 Day Event in Wales commencing June 8th to June 10th. The plan would be to drive to Wales on the Weds or Thursday ready to undertake 2 days of rides (Friday and Saturday). I am prepared to organise the accommodation local to the ride but to do this, I need to know how many people want to go and, if you say you want to go, to pay a sensible deposit.

Once I know numbers, I will look for suitable self-catering accommodation which may entail some sharing - we can split food costs as needed. If you can respond by Sunday 11/2/18 I would appreciate it!

We would plan to take 2 cars (max 8 people) sharing fuel costs as well.
See below for ride info. See link - http://www.letapeuk.co.uk and click L'Etape Wales and check out the comprehensive web site. You would be expected to make your own ride bookings.
