QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I don’t ride a bike to add days to my life. I ride a bike to add life to my days” – Anonymous

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Yes, Sally S - again!

Not content with conquering the west coast of Iceland, Sally took on a even more daunting task - leading the Anerley of a memorable Halloween Ride this week. She wasn't the only one smiling. Hopefully, the first of many great rides to come.

BICYCLE PORN OF THE WEEK

Are you a wannabbee James Bond, Beretta in one hand, a gorgeous dame in the other? Well this may be the way to start - your very own Aston Martin. Not a DB4, I'm afraid - that got royally destroyed in Skyfall. A replacement DB4 would come in the wrong side of £500,000.

So this is a knockdown starter for a mere fifteen grand (rocket launchers not included). You will have to be quick as only 107 Storck Fascenario.3 Aston Martin bikes will be built, which makes for an exclusive club. But then - we are the Anerley!

CHRISTMAS LUNCH: BOOKING NOW

The Anerley Christmas Lunch on Tuesday 12th December is now confirmed at the Brasserie Vacherin, 48 - 50 South End, Croydon. There are only 30 places available and a good few have been bagged already. Reply to this email to reserve your place. Partners welcome.

It is all being organised by Viv and she will be asking you for a £10 deposit or the full £28 (which includes a glass of wine). I believe a vegetarian option is available. Introducing Viv for those who don't normally do the Tuesday Ride:

CLUB AGM: 12th NOVEMBER

Reminder it is now Sunday week (12th) at 4pm after the Freewheel race (the heavier you are the better). Please get any questions, motions, ideas into Meike or Secretary Jo early this week please. Reply to this email if you don't have their contact details. The agenda will be in next week's Bugle.

Remember no sub - no vote - no cake. A few subs are still outstanding. Brian will take dosh on the day. £15/£10 concessions.

It will be held at the usual venue: South London Harriers Club, 194 Brighton Rd, Coulsdon CR5 2NF. Its carefully hidden up an alleyway behind that purple sign next to Wok Central:

TERROR IN NEW YORK

Eight die as this:

became this:

A tragedy. But not the first here. The New York Bicycling Coalition reminds us that Eric Ng was killed by a drunk driver who also drove at speeds up to 60 mph for over a mile on the path in 2006. Lucky he killed only one?

They call for more protection for cyclists whether from terrorists, drunks, road ragers or just inattentive drivers. More here: http://www.nybc.net/nybc-statement-on-hudson-river-greenway-tragedy/

AN ALTERNATE SUNDAY RIDE

This Sunday is also the annual London to Brighton Veteran Rally. The first was co-sponsored by the CTC and in recent years there has been a tradition of cyclists joing in. Its the finest way to see these ancient monsters bumble their way south at speeds in line with our own.

Go all the way & back, back by train - or turn anywhere on the route. A great way to do the distance and pace you want. The weather looks good, if cool.

This years route has veered to the west going through Banstead instead of down past our starting point on Brighton Road. If you are interested in joining the unofficial ride then go here: https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/london-to-brighton-veteran-cars-run-sunday-5-november.224702/

FINALLY: NOT KEEPING COOL

Yep, its autumn going on winter and time to re-check the wardrobe with gear to match. Des suggested the conclusions of this article may be helpful:

70 Degrees (21C):  Shorts and short-sleeve jersey.

60 Degrees (15.5C):  Shorts and long-sleeve jersey or long-sleeve thin undershirt.

50 Degrees (10C):  Tights or leg warmers; heavy long-sleeve jersey with sleeveless or short-sleeve wicking undershirt; or lightweight long-sleeve jersey with long-sleeve undershirt.

45 Degrees (7C):  Tights or leg warmers; long-sleeve wicking undershirt and lined cycling jacket;  thin full-fingered gloves; headband covering ears; wool socks and shoe covers.

40 Degrees (4.4C):  Tights or leg warmers; long-sleeve heavy mock turtleneck (I like Under Armour) and lined cycling jacket; medium-weight gloves; headband covering ears;  winter cycling shoes, shoe covers, wool socks.

35 Degrees (1.7C):  Heavyweight tights; long-sleeve heavy wicking turtleneck undershirt and heavy cycling jacket; heavy-weight gloves; headband covering ears;  winter cycling shoes, shoe covers, wool socks with charcoal toe warmers.

30 Degrees (-1C):  Heavyweight tights; long-sleeve heavy wicking turtleneck undershirt and heavy cycling jacket; heavy-weight gloves; lined skullcap; winter cycling shoes, shoe covers, wool socks with charcoal toe warmers.

25 Degrees (-3.9C):  Winter bib tights; long-sleeve heavy wicking full turtleneck undershirt, long-sleeve jersey and lined cycling jacket; mittens or lobster claw gloves; balaclava; winter cycling shoes, wool socks, plastic bag, charcoal toe warmers.

20 Degrees (-6.7) and below:  Winter bib tights; long-sleeve heavy wicking full turtleneck undershirt, long-sleeve jersey and lined cycling jacket; mittens or lobster claw gloves; balaclava; winter cycling shoes, wool socks, plastic bag, charcoal toe warmers.

Personally anything below 37F/3C is irrelevant as I will still be under the bedclothes. YMMV.

Happy Cycling!
