QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"What's a bike ride if we can't congratulate ourselves with our tipple of choice, a slice of cake and a chin wag?" - Anna Glowinski

BICYCLISTS OF THE WEEK

Anna proving the Anerley DNA has passed down a generation from her mum Geraldine Glowinski who began riding and racing under the tutelage of John T with our club. Geraldine moved to the V .C. Londra in 2010 to join the 'family firm' with husband, Marek and two children Philip and Anna.

Anna featured in last week's 'Cycleclips' - announcing she would be hosting Cycling UK's virtual cafe to keep us all entertained during the lockdown. Anna will have live interview with some of the most faamous names from across all aspects of the cycling world. Follow it on Facebook and the CUK Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EJTjcdB6IE

And here is Geraldine and hubby at what looks suspiciously like Tanhouse Farm:

TRICYCLE  OF THE WEEK

HW Bartleet on his ‘Childsmobile’ which he designed in 1905, and rode - with his son as passenger - till 1912. Bartleet joined the Anerley in 1889 and was a member for 30 years. He also wrote the 'Bartleet Bicycle Book' - considered the bible of early cycling.

ARGENTINA & CHILE PART 2

Sally & Tim continue their adventure from Bariloche to near Coyhaique (18 days, 597 miles) including Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Welsh teacakes, white water rafting plus more gravel and yet more gravel ...

Some pics below. The story and lots more pics here: https://anerleybc.org/argentina-chile-with-style-part-2/
Just a reminder that Anerley has always been a touring club with the world as its oyster. This is a memorial GH Smith's escapades around the turn of the 19/20th centuries:

MORE ANERLEY HISTORY

As promised last week John E has put together a short history of GE Osmond, inventor of the 'heel clip' and Anerley rider around the same time: https://anerleybc.org/anerley-pioneers-ge-osmond/

DOWN UNDER - BICYCLES ARE THE NEW TOILET PAPER

That roughly translates as Australian bicycle sales are booming as as covid-19 lockdown residents crave exercise. Same as here Australia's bicycle shops were spared - and now they are running out of spares. More here:

UP OVER - HOW WILL COVID-19 CHANGE LONDON?

The lockdown has brought us clear skies, amazing reductions in air pollution and a lot less noise pollution from the roads and the skies. Great benefits that many do not wish to lose when we get back to the 'new' normal.

Milan has shown the way in announcing an ambitious scheme to reduce car use after lockdown. They will turn 35km of streets over to cyclists and pedestrians.

Here people will be reluctant to crowd into trains, tubes and buses. Indeed many of us at risk may be forbidden to do so,. Realistically few can turn to cars to get into London. The answer is obvious. But can the mayor make it happen? Is there the will in Westminster and what of the lobby groups?

FINALLY

This is Audrius Lapinskas who lived and died in Cambridge. He was drunk, he was riding on the pavement and making too much noise. He allegedly damaged the wing mirror of a Mercedes car.

The owner hit him hard in the face three or four times killing him.

How can you justify that? First the murder charge was reduced to manslaughter and when it came to sentencing the judge, David Farrell QC, said the situation was caused by the victim. The killer got a gentle tap on the knuckles. No jail just  a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

A life for a wing mirror. It's a strange world even without Covide-19.
