QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Most people never ride far enough on their first wind to find out they've got a second" - after William James

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

60 is what the wind may peak on Sunday but this week's cyclist has endured weather from pretty every part of the globe. Nominated by TomTom - Ian Hibell hailed from Epsom.

Ian started cyclo-touring because he and his dad couldn't afford the train fare to the seaside - sleeping on benches or anything else they could find. He went on to ride from North to South america, Norway to the Cape of Good Hope and Bangkok to Vladivostok.

Amongst his many writings is this one from 2003 'Water, Sand & Ice' which is a great read of a great life cycling:

He diied following a hit-and-run while cycling Greece in 2008.

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Ian Hibell's frame of choice came from FH (Freddie) Grubb. Freddie was born in 1887 got a silver medal at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics before setting up shop two years later making bikes in Brixton. A few years later he moved his business to Croydon.

Freddiie died in 1949 and the business was aquired by Holdsworth who used the FH Grubb brand up to around 1978. The name has re-emerged as hip cycle shop in Islington specialising in elegant timeless bikes: https://www.freddiegrubb.com/
