QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

"To possess a bicycle is to be able first to look at it, then to touch it. But touching is revealing as insufficient; what is necessary is to be able to get on the bicycle and take a ride. But this gratuitous ride is likewise insufficient; it would be necessary to use the bicycle to go on some errands…Finally, as one could foresee, handing over a bank note is enough to make a bicycle belong to me, but my entire life is needed to realize this possession.” - Jean-Paul Sartre

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

The winner of the Catford Classic Hill Climb [aka York Hill] last Sunday was "Rowan Brackston London Dynamo 01:57.6".

No, it isn't this guy. This is Phil Mason and it has been his week for 35 years. It was in 1983 that Phil of San Fairy Ann CC set the climb record of 01:47.6 - a whole 10 seconds faster. Since then only three riders have even beaten  01:50  making Phil's achievement all the more extraordinary. This  despite Catford CC offering a special prize to anyone who can beat it.

A true successor to our own SF Edge who won the first climb in 1887. Course statistics: 707 yard climb with an average gradient of 12.5%, with two stretches of 25%.

Its only a tenner to enter so why not start training for next year to break a 36 year record and put the Anerley back on top?

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

This may be the type of bike to beat Phil. British hill-climb champion Adam Kenway used this Raleigh Militis bike to win the 2017 Monsal Hill-climb. Note the cut-down bars, single chainring and barebones saddle - ouch!

Surely a giving a considerable mechanical advantage over Phil's bike. So no excuses if you have six grand to spare!

HILLS OF SOUTH LONDON

You don't even have to do Kent or the Surrey Hills for training. Our side of the river is suprisingly hilly. Well, not a surprise if you live near me next to Crystal Palace. A bonus is the temendous views from the top. Above Westow Hill, Here is a list and where you can find more info: https://www.southlondonclub.co.uk/blog/8-best-hilltop-views-in-south-london

THE ANERLEY FREEWHEEL COMPETITION

If going up hills is too tough for you - then what about downhill - and strictly no pedalling. Oh and it is said the more weight you carry - the better!

Yes, the season is coming round for the club's most bitterly fought for trophy. Tina will be defending her double achievement last year in winning outright and also the female trophy.

it's simple. It's mostly about holding your nerve and not braking on the corners. Let's hope the water board have the Bletchingley road open again on November 11th. Meet 9am at Shurguard/501 as for the normal Sunday ride which will be forshortened for the Club AGM later in the day.

It's a bring and share biscuit and cake experience. Suggestions for the agenda are also very welcome - what tours, races or other plans we should have for 2019. If you are an officer don't forget to write up a report.

FINALLY

How lucky most of you are to live in the London Borough of Croydon. [Never did I imagine I would ever write that].

You might think it's cycling infrastructure is crap and the council disinterested but the real badlands of London lie north of you in Lewisham. Gyratories galore, superhighway free zone ... and the man with the green flag [should it be red?] is one of our ruling councillors. He  has set out to really annoy those of us trying to expand and diversify cycling in the borough.

Sit down, read this and explode. If that doesn't do it read the comments below it: https://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/16958821.lewisham-councillor-middle-class-white-male-cyclists-have-undue-influence-on-road-policy/
