QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Riding bicycles will not only benefit the individual doing it, but the world at large.” - Udo E. Simonis

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Simon Yates will have to wait till he wins his next crown. I mean a Brit winning a world classic is getting a bit average these days ...

Whereas here we have the lovely Maggie auditioning for her part of 'Pirates of the Arun' a saga in 100 gruelling miles last Sunday to Amberley and back. Many will know we won't have Maggie much longer. First she is off to Australia for three weeks and then, fingers crossed, off to live in Bristol.

No more slightly dodgy stories att pub stops but I guess the club will go on. So thanks Maggie for all the fun you have brought to our rides. We will have your new home waymarked for when we tour west.

BICYCLES OF THE WEEK

Last week we brought you John E's beautifully restored Holdsworth Monsoon. This week we bring you rather more old Holdsworths presumably also made in Anerley together with a rather lurid late Ford Cortina - it could be a Lotus Cortina with that badge on the rear pillar.

This was their 1970s racing team who didn't do too badly:

That car - a Ford Corsair? More info here: http://www.nkilgariff.com/Proteam.htm

DID YOU KNOW ...

The Catford CC Hill Climb is one of the oldest races in the world. The club was founded in 1886, the hill climbs started the year after with over own SF Edge the winner. Some records suggest it started at Westerham Hill but from 1891 it was held at York Hill. At first the object was just not to fall off - and a few maintain that tradition. Today it remains one of the country's main hill races.

Traditionally as a neighbouring club both in age and original location we have participated - or at least been part of the supporters willing riders on. A tradition we should re-instate?

The 2018 version is going to be held in two weeks time, Sunday 7th October. Entries close September 29th if you feel you are up to it: https://www.cyclinguk.org/event/catford-classic-hill-climb

CYCLING MYTH 5: Cyclists ignore red lights

Some do, and shame on them. It's not 'all cyclists', however, or even most, but rather a minority.

The statistics suggest that car drivers are equally likely to transgress. According to the Department for Transport, disobeying automatic traffic signals was a contributory factor in 1% of cycle accidents and 1% of car accidents in 2013.

That's 187 and 1,664 accidents respectively, so while the proportions may be equal, there are many more drivers than cyclists causing accidents by running red lights.

CYCLE MYTH 6: Cyclists should use cycle lanes & tracks

Cycle lanes are painted areas on the road, while cycle tracks are separate from the road. Cyclists are not obliged to use either; even the Highway Code says to use them 'when practicable' (that is, useful).

Some cycle lanes are not useful: they're too narrow and place you too close to the kerb. Cycle tracks vary too. Some are convenient, while others are badly lit, badly maintained, or force you to give way at every side road.

One day we may get wonderful cycle facilities like they have in the Netherlands – some of which are compulsory. In the meantime, if a cycle lane or cycle track helps you, use it; if it doesn't, don't.

Hence when and how much Bugle arrives in your inbox next week is a bit random at this time. Can anybody organising rides, reports or other stocking fillers please get it to me EARLY BY WEDNESDAY please.

Future guest editors would also be very welcome. Anyone who can string a few words together may be advised to get your excuses in early too ...
