QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.” - William Shakespeare

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

Today The Giro d'Italia starts in Jerusalem which is not Italy or even Europe and opens up some political sensitivities and the Chris Froome controversy.

Not only has Israel stolen the race but also one of its greatest winners - Gino Bartali - having won the Giro d'Italia twice (1936, 1937) and the Tour de France in 1938. After the war he added two other victories in both events: the Giro d'Italia in 1946 and the Tour de France in 1948.

Not only was he one of Italy's greatest cyclists but during WW2 used his cycling ability to save hundreds of Jews from Nazi persecution by cycling through Italy to carry messages and false documents to the Italian resistance. It was also discovered, ten years after his passing, that Bartali hid a Jewish family during World War II.

Hence Israel has honoured him as a hero and has made him, posthumously, an Israeli citizen. We should remermber him too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gino_Bartali

Here is ihe bike he won the 1938 Tour de France. Interesting 4 gear arrangement. It is on display at the Museo del Ciclismo - Madonna del Ghisallo in Lombardy. A good place to visit: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g2507434-d2487603-Reviews-Museo_del_Ciclismo_Madonna_del_Ghisallo-Magreglio_Lake_Como_Lombardy.html

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Well - it does have two wheels! But - no bell! Snapped during a Minneapolis May Day Parade.

TOUR DE BULLECOURT - A YEAR  ON

Those that were on the ride will never forget and those who heard about it will remember - how a certain rider made it into France on his wife's passport and couldn't find a way to get back. Well until a certain Mrs Tom V took a boat trip.

He has competition. How a wife flew Manchester to India on husband's passport: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-43959985

Meanwhile a short tour to Rouen and Normandy/Paris in September to commemorate Montague Calder's brothers death in 1918 is in the works when those interested get together.

FINALLY

Bikes, bikes, bikes. Thousands of them but not in a good place. This is what happens when bike sharing services go pear-shaped. Imagine the cost. More pix on China's mountainous problem here: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/gallery/2018/may/01/unexpected-beauty-china-bicycle-graveyards-share-bikes-in-pictures#img-9

China isn't the only country to have problems. Paris's famous Velolib sharing system is now in a TSB-like meltdown as a new system doesn't quite take over: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/04/paris-bike-share-scheme-velib-hi-tech-upgrade-problems

FINALLY,  FINALLY

Bank Holiday Monday is looking to be hot, may be too hot to ride. So why not sit it out on the lawn with a G&T or two and listen to other people cycycling - or rather talking about it?
