QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“The bicycle is the most civilized conveyance known to man. Other forms of transport grow daily more nightmarish. Only the bicycle remains pure in heart" – Iris Murdoch

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

TomTom was a motorbike tourist around Europe and the USA. His first cycling continental tour was only last September. Here he is last week coming ashore at St Malo for a C2C2C (Coast to Coast to Coast) across and the Brittany peninsular and back in 500 kilometers. He already has another two continental trips this summer to Spain in May  and back to France in July!

Next week he gets back to leading the Tuesday 'B' pack to Lullingstone. At the front or at the back - a true stalwart of the club.

BICYCLE BELL OF THE WEEK

This spiffing shiny bell sounds good and looks even better. Well except for the unfortunate reflection. What is really neat is how it is a part of the headset. Yep, it replaces a 10mm 1 1/8" headset spacer and costs only a fiver. Bargain!

Go on, treat yourself ... https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s124p3808/SPA-CYCLES-Brass-A-Headset-Spacer-Bell

JOHN T

Club Members will be saddened to hear John suffered a very serious stroke last weekend. Meike writes:

John is holding his own at the moment but it seems to be very up and down.  I have been told that that is normal for stroke patients.   He is still in the Atkinson Morley but will eventually be transferred to Mayday.  I have no idea yet as to how much of a recovery there will be but his face seems to have returned almost to normal and he can use both hands .  No more news than that at the moment but it is good that he is talking normally at times, not for long but he is talking.

CLUB HISTORY [1]

John E writes:

There are a few publications I can get that might interest members, Bartleet's Bicycle Book, H.W. Bartleet was a member of the 'Anerley' joined 1889 and a member for 30 years, his bicycle collection is the foundation of the Coventry Transport Museum today, the publication is a copy of the 1931 book 107 pages cost £2.50. Another is the 'Flying Yankee' A.A.Zimmerman World Champion 1887 1905 . I believe he won a scratch 2 mile race at Herne Hill in 1893 organised by the 'Anerley' 144 pages £2.00 Another 'A life time in Cycling' about Croydon born Charlie Davey winner of the famous 'Anerley 12' hour race and Addiscombe CC member 146 pages £8.00, and last, the history of cycle racing at Crystal Palace 1869-2016 Anerley BC held many meetings there and were considered the home club of the track in it's early days. 52 pages £5.00.

Please let me know if you want any of these publications.

CLUB HISTORY [2]

You may remember some months ago a kind bicycle shop owner in Horsham had one of our old trophies and asked if we would like it back. The answer was YES!

And the only decent way to collect it is by bicycle. Hence next Tuesday [weather permitting] the Tuesday 'A' team won't be trying to beat the the 'B's to Lullingstone but will speed southward to bag a bit of our heritage. Everyone welcome to come along but it will be a little longer than the customary ride.

DISC BRAKES

Des writes:

Disc brakes are now becoming the norm for road bikes, but some purists who are stuck in past, give several reasons why they think that traditional rim brakes are superior.

The increased popularity and usage of disc brakes are now providing more experience of the pros and cons of these two types of brakes. So which one do practical experiences suggest is best?

A recent update is here: http://blog.mapmyrun.com/the-latest-intel-on-disc-brakes-on-the-road/?utm_source=international&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=MMRide_Intl_EU_NL_Weekly&os_ehash=55@sfmc:52136460

One benefit the article doesn't mention is broken spokes. The resultant distortion means rim brakes have to be let off to get to a place of safety which, if its the front, is very dangerous in itself. Fortunately when a friend of mine last week lost a spoke on the front - disc brakes are not affected. Brilliant!

FINALLY

I'm sure all club members will be thinking of John, Meike and their family at this difficult time. John is such an inspirational cyclist for many of us. If only I could experience a few of his adventures or match his speed.

That's him in India. And here are six of the best tours we have captured for posterity: https://anerleybc.org/category/touring/turnbull-tours/
