QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“The bicycle uses little space. Eighteen bikes can be parked in the place of one car, thirty of them can move along in the space devoured by a single automobile. It takes three lanes of a given size to move 40,000 people across a bridge in one hour by using automated trains, four to move them on buses, twelve to move them in their cars, and only two lanes for them to pedal across on bicycles." - Ivan Illich, Toward a History of Needs, 1978

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

This is Gorm, (did I get that right?) , who came on our last Sunday Ride. It was his first ride with any club and, I guess, he was a little nervous. But he did around 40 miles in apparent comfort. If he can fake that he should be able to fake anything. Hope to see you again real soon Gorm!

BICYCLE  HELMET OF THE WEEK

Those that are not totally convinced that helmets make cyclists safer may, however, be persuaded to part with £180 for this little beauty. The Corus Omni is less of a helmet than a complete multimedia experience with its own mobile app.

It combines an an aero shape with clever bone-conduction speakers built into the helmet straps, contains a 700mAh battery that's gives 7.5 hours run time between charges and also comes with a bar-mounted remote from this you can control the audio (pause, play, fast-forward, rewind and volume control) and a button for answering calls, as the Omni contains a wind-shielded microphone mounted in the brow.

Oh and its got flashing lights on the back. Read a review here: https://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/category/helmets-and-protection/helmet-standard/product/coros-omni-smart-cycling-helmet-51712/

STEVE'S LAST CALL FOR DRAGONS

Steve wants to get this organised by mid-February so, if you are at all interested, catch him tomorrow night at the Club Dinner or respond by email asap. This is part of what he wrote last week [full text https://anerleybc.org/bugle-319/]:

I have looked further into the proposed L'Etape Dragon 3 Day Event in Wales commencing June 8th to June 10th. The plan would be to drive to Wales on the Weds or Thursday ready to undertake 2 days of rides (Friday and Saturday). I am prepared to organise the accommodation local to the ride but to do this, I need to know how many people want to go and, if you say you want to go, to pay a sensible deposit.

See below for ride info. See link - http://www.letapeuk.co.uk and click L'Etape Wales and check out the comprehensive web site.

  • A CROSS TOAST to help the drink down.
Reminder is 6:30 for 7pm at Purley United Reformed Church, Brighton Road, Purley CR8 2LN.

Happy Cycling!
