QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“There may be a better land where bicycle saddles are made of rainbow, stuffed with cloud; in this world the simplest thing is to get used to something hard.” - Jerome K. Jerome

BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

Or to be more precise - bicyclist of Le Tour. Denise B was a star both on and off the bike. If she had doubts about being able to keep and sustain the distance had troubled her - her dedicated training carrying bricks in her saddle on club rides delivered in spades.

At the front or nearby she was a quiet inspiration to the rest of us always smiling and a great example of how almost anyone can enjoy unsupported club touring with a little bit of preparation.

TRIKE OF THE WEEK

Like Mother, like Son? Ian B and his trike.

Although our title is the Anerley BICYCLE Club some of our earliest photos show that tricycles were an important part of the ABC. In more recent years the Sian C and the late Jack J both rode long and and far on trikes. So perhaps we should try and persuade young Ian to trade in his kit for that of a club who raced and treasured these contraptions before the Addiscombe was even thought of!

TUESDAYS ARE A'CHANGING

Not if you are comfortable with the current ride pace starting at 10am. But if you want to go a little faster and be back by 1:30pm there is now another option as Tuesday Vice-Captain John D explains:

It is great that the Tuesday rides have become so popular. However the number of riders has now got to the stage where we  have to change the arrangements to ensure good management and safety. It has therefore been decided that from next Tuesday, 16 May there will be two rides from the existing start (Purley Oaks Recycling Centre). The first, faster  ride will be led by Tom Vaz and will start at 09.30. The second, slightly slower ride, will start at 10.00  and be led, as now, by Des D, John D, TomTom and Pete R. It is hoped that the second  group  will therefore arrive at the lunch stop 45 minutes to one hour after the first group by which time the first group will have left or be just leaving.

This will have several  big advantages. Firstly, and most importantly, it will make for two smaller, safer and more manageable groups on the road. Secondly it will enable us to use a wider range of tea stops which can manage to serve these 2 smaller groups. Last, but not least, it will enable riders to choose a group that suits them best, not only in the speed but also in that the first group will get home earlier.

We will trial this arrangement for a few weeks and revise as necessary in the light of experience - for example, if too many people choose one group. Please note that there will only be a small difference in the speed of the groups so please don't all try to cram into the first group.

See This Week's Rides for more details for next Tuesday.

AND NOW THE SATURDAY SHOW

Pete S writes:

A few members of the club have been riding on Saturdays and are now turning this into a regular ride that all Anerley members are welcome to join.

Originally we started when the weekend weather forecast showed Saturday as sunny and Sunday as raining so the prospect of a dry ride was the main incentive. On other occasions it was family activities on Sundays that ruled out a Sunday ride so Saturdays started to become a popular day to ride.

Distance and pace is similar to Sundays so any members who find themselves better suited to a Saturday run, whether it is occasionally or regularly, are welcome to join us at any time. We have a whatsapp group called ABC Saturdays and we circulate ride details a couple of days in advance - just reply back to say you may be coming along and you're in.

We occasionally do off road in the winter when road conditions are poor.

Start time is 10.00am and will be from Shurguard

FINALLY - OUR LOST CYCLE LANES

Croydon's cycle lanes have long been recognised as crap. At least there is progress in and around central London. But have we yet caught up with both the ambition and achievement of our government back in the 1930s? Could we now have an infrastructure as good as The Netherlands?

Carlton Reid has started a Kickstarter campaign to rediscover the 'lost' cycle lanes built 80 years ago. Bringing them back to life and an example for more. None in Croydon so far - unless you know of any. But a couple not too far away (a couple in Sutton). More here about it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/carltonreid/lets-rescue-britains-forgotten-1930s-protected-cyc
