QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Ordinary things merely annoy people. Inspired hatred is one more bit of evidence that bicycles are something great, something beyond the mundane – something worthy of grand animosity.” - Bill Strickland

BICYCLE & BICYCLIST OF THE WEEK

A 1963 Croydon-built Allin with John Turnbull of this parish pictured in front of the Henri Desgranges monument on the Galibier. A part of his 600 mile amazing Alpine adventure back in 1986.

A ride we can now all re-live as the first episode of TURNBULL TOURS. We will be publish each of these over the coming months as an inspiration to follow him cycling around the globe.

THIS WEEK'S RIDES

Sunday Classic: 9am Shurguard/501 Brighton Road. Capt'n Tom V is indisposed with man-flu so Stuart G will be leading a long, slow and, hopefully, fairly flat ride to the club's favourite greasy spoon: The Agora at East Grinstead. Then onto one of the quaintest old English pubs: The Red Lion at Turners Hill. The forecast is warm and dry.

Sunday Scorcher: 10am Old Post Office, Coulsdon. 40 miles non stop eat before leaving bring a bottle. More: https://anerleybc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16

Tuesday: 10am Shurguard/501 Brighton Road. Peter R leads to Four Elms. This maybe the route: https://anerleybc.org/four-elms-route/

Thursday: 10am Shurguard/501 Brighton Road. TBA check website.

RECENT RIDE REPORTS

Sunday 19th: These legs and many others did a long'en to an equaller long queue at Tanhouse Farm and onto Ockley, Abinger Hatch and rounding off over Box Hill: https://anerleybc.org/sunday-ride-19th-february-2017/

Tuesday 21st: TomTom led 18 riders to Horne Golf Club: https://anerleybc.org/tuesday-ride-21st-february-2017/

Thursday 23rd: Dave Go writes: Barrie and yours truly set off with new member Doris and arrived at early tea stop in Lower Barn Road (Badger's Moon) and after a cuppa and custard pie decided to gingerly return home. Had a personal best time up Rectory Road to Sanderstead roundabout thanks to Doris. Have made it clear that she is not welcome in the Club!

FINALLY

This is TomTom trying to herd 18 cyclists on last Tuesday's ride outside Horne Golf Club. That's the easy bit. The club is becoming a victim of its success with the explosive growth in the numbers riding. This is particulary acute on the Tuesday Rides when the traffic is appreciable heavier. Trying to overtake a very long line of cyclists on winding country roads is challenging for drivers. It ends up with potentially dangerous risks being taken or frustration towards cyclist being stirred up. Not good news.

What to do?

Trying to leave a gap hasn't worked. The gap soon re-fills with speedier riders from the second group merging with slower riders from the first. And then we are all back together at the re-group.

I would like to pose that we experiment in doing another way. Have two distinct groups, one of which will start a few minutes before the other and will not regroup (except after junctions or a real steep, long hill). Riders with punctures or wanting a rest will be scooped up by the following group who will continue the Anerley tradition of not dropping anybody.

This is not a fast/slow division. With the same moving average speed the first group is unlikely to be caught and will help stagger the arrival at the cafe - which helps everyone in that few can cope with such a simultaneous arrival of so many cyclists.

This is an experiment. You may have better ideas. Please discuss it here: https://anerleybc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21

Happy Cycling!
