New Year Edition

QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“It is the unknown around the corner that turns my wheels.” - Heinz Stücke,  German long-distance cyclist

BICYCLIST OF THE YEAR

Tom V. But what for?
* Leading two rides a week?
* Stretching us on his 100 milers?
* Finding new routes, new cafes, new pubs?
* Or just being a good humoured inspiration?

Take your choice or add a few more. Tom may have retired the captaincy but will be steering things behind the scenes and still upfront with the kind permission of his senior management team. So thank you Nina for continuing to share Tom with us!

BICYCLE OF THE YEAR

BikeRadar's choice for 2018 - the Giant TCR Advanced 2. Why? Well at £1449 it is, for once, an affordable one. Also one that will save you carrying spare inner tubes in your backpocket, Shimano 105 with the delicacy of Ultrega. Don't listen to me - but watch the video here: https://youtu.be/18ntHzNLoR0

WHOOPY OF THE YEAR

Thank you Viv for noticing the Southern Counties Cycling Union 2019 diary of TT events in last week's Bugle was the 2018 programme. Somebody over at SCCU forgot to update their webpage. Well, that's my excuse.

Hence the 2019 dates remain a mystery. But races mean trophies and SCCU have sorted that together with better recognition of the dominant gender. I quote from their recent correspondence:

One for the ladies or perhaps that should read three. The Counties will be offering three extra trophies in 2019 specifically for ladies, these trophies will mirror those on offer to male competitors at 25 and 50 miles plus 10 miles it is hoped that these new awards will encourage increased participation in SCCU events by the ladies.

Despite the ever increasing pressure of traffic on the districts roads the Counties will be promoting a full programme of events to include.. Hardriders 21, Sporting week end (10 &25mile) 10, 2x25, 50 and 100 mile time trials plus the circuit event at the Crystal Palace.
All the promotions are qualifiers for any of the SCCU championships or trophy. See list;
Ladies, Men’s, Junior and Veterans BAR
Fastest 10 Lady
Fastest 25 lady, Male and Junior
Fastest 50 lady
Fastest 50 Male (Vice Presidents Tankard)
Fastest Novice 50 miles (Tacagni Cup)
Fastest 100 mile (Tom Smith Cup)
Team BAR (Amateur Cup)
Hardriders 21 (Bill Diplo Trophy)
Sporting week end 10 and 25 mile (Dunlop Cup)
Crystal Palace Alick Bevin Trophy (Ladies) Bowman Trophy (School person)
50 mile Team (Roberts Shield)
100 mile team (Syd Gray Shield)

Their website is here: http://www.sccu.co.uk/
Their AGM is at St Andrews Church Hall Woodmanstern Road, Coulsdon. CR5 2DN, 26th January 2019 at 2.00pm. As we are affiliated I guess any interested can attend. Mark?

CYCLING ART

A few weeks ago we featured the art of Frank Patterson - perhaps the greatest cycling artist - certainly the most prolific. This wek we turn to the UK's greatest sponsor of cycling art - Carradice. They also make really neat saddle bags & stuff.

Bob B has some really good stuff too. Hint, hint ...
