QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

"A picture is worth a thousand words" - Tess Flanders

BICYCLIST OF THE YEAR?

Will Geraint Thomas win BBC's Sports Personality of the Year next week? Or will the prejudice against cyclist sthat saw off Chris Froome for four years - strike again?

His home crowd love him - Geraint was crowned "Welsh Sports Personality of the Year" last week. So here's hoping ...

He needs all the trophies he can get to replace this one: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/geraint-thomas-tour-de-france-trophy-stolen/

Any other suggestions for Anerley's Bicyclist of the year?  Send your nominations back to this email address.

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Geraint's winning steed this year - the Pinarello F10 X-Light. A mere £6,099 from Sigma Bikes. But I bet Geraint's had a few extras. BICYCLING ILLUSTRATOR OF THE WEEK

That could be John T drawing up for refreshment in his youth. And that pub still exists near Horsham - far more evocative as a drawing than a photograph:

That's the magic of Frank Patterson. Britain's most famous and proloific bicycling illustrator. Here are a few more that, perhaps, reflect some of experiences of even today's 'Sunday' riders:

From Wikipedia:

Frank Patterson was born in Portsmouth into a family of seafarers. After completing his studies at Portsmouth School of Art he walked to London seeking fame and fortune. Producing pen and ink illustrations for books and magazines was the only way he could make a living. Most of his drawing was done with a Gillott 303 pen with a goose quill - "slapping in the pork", to use his own expression.

Early in 1898 Frank and his wife Emily leased a derelict Elizabethan property near Billingshurst in West Sussex for an annual rent of nine-pence (3½p); it remained their home for the next 54 years. The house had no name so they called it Pear Tree Farm, a reference to the only recognisable tree.

His connection with Cycling Weekly magazine began in 1893 and continued until his death eventually serving under six editors. For this magazine and from 1925 for The Gazette, the Cyclists' Touring Club magazine, he produced over 26,000 drawings and boasted that he never missed a deadline. He worked for other Temple Press magazines, drew Boer War pictures for The Illustrated London News, and illustrations for The Book of the Home and The House.

Patterson cycled until the age of 38 when he switched to walking after a leg injury. From then on he often worked from photographs and postcards provided by friends. In 1944, he was awarded the Bidlake Memorial Prize for "his joyous delineation of the pastime of cycling for 51 years, and the pleasure his work has given in particular to cyclists serving their country the world over during 1944". In 1950 his health began to deteriorate and on 17 July 1952 he died. At his own request his ashes were scattered at Pear Tree Farm.

CHRISTMAS STOCKING FILLER #3

There’s nothing more discerning than telling someone they’ve been doing it wrong for years. Most people assume that the limit screws on Shimano derailleurs are adjusted with a standard cross-head screwdriver, and for the most part they’d be right enough, any old small Phillips will happily do the job, once you’d poked the crud out the heads.

Even a teeny flat screwdriver if you’re struggling for tools. But that would be Wrong, no matter how long you’ve been doing it. Shimano limit screws have always been JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), which looks the same but is oh so subtly different to a Phillips screwdriver. One tweak with a JIS screwdriver and you’ll see.

The pleasingly weighty aluminium handles on this Park tool are knurled for tender grip and a depression in the end gives you somewhere to rest a thumb for delicate adjustment pressure. This should have your cyclist friend scurrying for the shed to play with this for hours, allowing you to settle down for post pudding port and a snooze in perfect tranquility.

A perfect snitch at only £29.99: https://www.freewheel.co.uk/park-tool-dsd-2-derailleur-screwdriver-2-jis-qkdsd2

RIDE REPORT

Only a quick one this week - Tuesday's Ride from Frank:

As you can see I was wearing my silk Burquah and what appears to be Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat's mankini bib shorts. Exposed legs help me go faster up hills.

I trust photo will be published and not censored…..

Met Des who drew my attention to Selsdon Gazette website link. Tom took a photo of us at a very interesting pond the other side Leatherhead to make the other bookend photo of our ride. The route to Bockett's was very interesting.
