QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

“Riding bicycles will not only benefit the individual doing it, but the world at large” - Udo E. Simonis

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

This has to be Geraint Thomas of course. Coincidentally this photo is from the final stage of the 2015 Tour de France where Geraint is wearing a one off kit to celebrate Chris Froome's overall victory. Will next week's picture be a reversal?

As we go to print the last hilly ride has got underway. Tomorrow is a TT. Sunday, a procession ...

Wasn't it the Giro d'Italia Stage 19 that something happened?

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

Hoshito (did I remember that right?) joined us on this Tuesday ride on his Brompton. But it was no normal Brompton and attracted considerable curiousity. First out it is their Sports model with low straight bars. Next it has just a two gear derailleur requiring both strength and flexibility on hills. The Kojak shod wheels were kinda special too with deep rims. The pedals were hi-tech too. Even the saddle was one of Brompton's Italian (non-leather) sporting jobs.

And yes, he does know Yoshi!

A bit more detail for Bromptonistas:

THE CARSHALTON CLASSIC

Date : 27/08/18
Set Up : 9.30am
Fair Hours 10:30 to 20:00

We have 5 possible ABC members prepared to set up and work the stand during the day, but we would request 4 or more people to assist as it is a long day
We are planning to have a marquee or gazebo in which we will have a display of bicycles supplied by members.  Also, we plan to have 2 cycles being used for a time trial completion for visitors - a small prize fund, ABC medal and possible ABC cake....

We will produce some banners, flags, bunting and the like, plus flyers for people to take away with ABC web site and ride times/info.

John E will do the historic photos and some club history with a montage type back drop.

The cycle exhibits are likely to be

Mark's 2012 Moulton
John Drake's 1989 Raleigh Kellogg Tour Bike
John E's 1961 Holdsworth Monsoon and 1987 Benotto World Champion bike
Viv's Liv Avail Advance Pro 1
Duncan (Viv's brother) is being asked to provide a couple of electric bikes
Meike will be asked if we can show John's Ron Cooper bike
Steve's 1978 Motobecane Grand Record

We are preparing a budget for the club to approve before we get into printing etc but roughly as follows:

Hire of pitch £21
Car parking free for 1 car (£6 for others setting up or street parking nearby)
Flyers/printing - Gorm FOC
Pop Up Banners 2 at £50/each
Bunting £25
Cakes £10
Incidentals £25

Steve B & Mark H are asking for helpers on the day, please.

THE HEAT, THE HEAT, THE HEAT ...

This is one solution to the heat of the sun - shaded under a solar panel powering an e-bike!

Seriously, during the hottest july I can remember we have had at least two members suffer heat exhaustion on club rides. It is difficult to keep sufficiently hydrated and all it takes is a hill, not even a biggie, to send one's body into a spiral of hyper-ventilation, loss of temperature control and dizziness.

Drink, drink, eat and drink. If that's not working and your body is saying something and the temperature is around 30C - DON'T TRY AND RIDE THROUGH IT!

Stop. And the Anerley is, after all, a stopping club. Recover before it gets seriously debilitating. It's not just the oldies who are at risk. Even super-fit 29 year-olds have succumbed. Remember Tommy Simpson?

RIDE REPORTS

Addiscombe 10 mile TT July 21st: This is Denise setting off on her very first Time Trial. Not on a TT bike, no aero-bars but returning an incredible 31 minutes. Not content, she now has her eyes on breaking 30 minutes. Perhaps she should try a 400k Audax to slow her down a bit ... before she catches up with this lot:

And here she is with our two other club triallists:

Tuesday 24th July: Hot, hot, hot. Too hot and long for Lullingstone so we cooled off at Cooling's. They are into wind-poered biking: https://anerleybc.org/tuesday-ride-24th-july-2018/
