UNLUCKIEST BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

This was in Poland. But a warning to every Anerley Cyclist going pot-holing on Surrey's Roads ... Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoXhA1qTqug&feature=youtu.be

BICYCLE OF THE DEAD

A ghost bike. A memorial to a road traffic victim. This one was in Chicago. The the first recorded ghost bike was also in the US, St Louis, Mississouri in 2003. Since then they have, sadly, spread around the world and, of couse, the UK.

Here is a list for London:
https://www.londonremembers.com/memorial_types/ghost-bike

Are they a fitting memorial - or do they put people off cycling?

UNLUCKY READERS

A couple of months ago Bugle 323 urged you to read this captivating memoir of our first one hundred years. Except if you tried evey other page was missing. a bit of sphericals-up with the scanner I'm afraid. But i blame the proof reader. Ouch!

The good John Eden has sterlingly had his wicked way with Mr Xerox and now we have the complete edition for your delectation here: https://anerleybc.org/a-story-told-by-members-1881-1981/

GETTING ON

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn"

Touching words we remembered last year on the Tour de Bullecourt. But what of the not fallen? Bugle 323 also featured the story that older cyclists improved performance off the saddle as well as on it. Now Des has sent me another article on how the younsters had better watch out when he is around. Briefly:

Two exciting new studies show that older men and women who have cycled for many years do not have the markers of aging found in non-exercising people. Their muscle size and strength, amount of body fat, levels of hormones such as testosterone, and blood cholesterol levels were close to those of much younger people.

DON'T PLAN ON RIDING THROUGH PRAGUE

But some cars are still allowed. Read how a city with fewer riders than many european capitals appears to want to keep it that way. Thanks to Pete S for the tip: https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2018/apr/03/prague-ban-bikes-historic-squares-streets-cyclists

RIDE CANCELLED? READ INSTEAD

TomTom has suggested these reads from the time when the Anerley was still a twinkle in the Puncture Fairy's eye ...

RIDE REPORTS

Saturday 7th April: Three at the start, Gorm, Roger and Pete became four as Graham joined us just after Farthing Down. We headed out via Bletchingly and Outwood, noting the roads were particularly bad with deep potholes. When are the councils going to start fixing them?

Horne golf club really is a great place for a tea stop. They are very keen to attract cyclists and have installed new cycle racks with CCTV near to the main entrance. Prices are very good with a cup of tea and poached eggs (2) on toast costing just £5.25.

Our tailwind assisted return brought us back via Lingfield, Crowhurst and Marden Park. We decided to change the pub stop to the Micro Pub, The Radius Arms in Whytleafe. Plenty of unusual cask ales on sale, the "Dormouse" was very pleasant and it's convenient for cyclists as there are railings outside the front in full view which you can lock your bikes against.

Friendly locals who are lycra tolerant too.  38 miles at 11.7 mph

Sunday 8th April: Cancelled.

Unlucky for some. One of these two wants your money. Young George is putting the frighteners out for all those who haven't responded by coughing up the £15/10 annual sub. He writes:

the club in good financial stead.

All the best
