QUOTE  OF THE WEEK

"Cycling is so difficult when you have to and so easy when you want to” – Felicity Luckey

BICYCLIST  OF THE WEEK

Professor Norman Lazarus, aged 82, has the immune system of a 20 year old.

Doing lots of exercise in older age can prevent the immune system from declining and protect people against infections, scientists say.

Prof Norman Lazarus, 82, of King's College London, took part in and co-authored the research, said: "If exercise was a pill, everyone would be taking it.

"It has wide-ranging benefits for the body, the mind, for our muscles and our immune system."

BICYCLE OF THE WEEK

OK, a small confession. I finally caved in and bought one of these for my train commute to Leatherhead. However, I look forward to continuing the adventure on the small wheels of my shiny new Brompton outside of work.

RIDE REPORTS

Sunday 18th February: No report on the website due to the presure of work! However, I had three hardy cyclists out with me on Sunday as we went to East Grinstead and back before the main period of rain. Tim, Pete Roberts and Bob the Builder were tempted out  by the morning sunshine and the promise of an almost balmy day.

FINALLY

Much as I love cycling, I don't follow the current cycling news as closely as Stuart. Indeed, fresh off the press to me is another early edition of the Anerley Gazette featuring "THE CAPTAINS CORNER" written by Monty Calder:

The Anerley Gazette is certainly one of, if not actually the oldest printed cycling club newsletter. In the Anerley Bicycle Club were a few members of the Harmsworth families with fingers in the printing trade. Their most famous relative was a member of the CTC called Alfred Harmsworth. A very keen cyclist, he wrote articles and eventually deputy edited the Bicycle News. Alfred went on to become a press baron,  founding the Daily Mail and owning the Mirror and the Times as well he eventually received the title of Lord Northcliffe. By 1914, Northcliffe controlled 40 per cent of the morning newspaper circulation in Britain, 45 per cent of the evening and 15 per cent of the Sunday circulation.

My brief moment in the TV studio with Pete Skinner was actually in Northcliffe House. I was a bit astonished to see the bust of a man who had links with the Anerley and was one of the main reasons that Britain went to WW1 while we commemorated the anniversary of our own Monty Calder who died in that same war...

I have hopes that Stuart may break the shackles and become the next Murdoch but who knows - he does have a sad lack of ambition that may hold him back!

Happy Cycling
