I really enjoyed your article, full of interesting info about the ride, places and local history. I also found out about the Weald iron industry thru cycling, and lots of other things about our area and it's history. Another area famous for it's hammer ponds is Lingfield and the surrounding area. The water there being mainly supplied by the Kent Brook which forms the local boundary where Kent, Sussex and Surrey meet.
For those who are not familiar with cycle-route.com, click here http://www.cycle-route.com/routes/Circular,_Dolgellau_to_Dysynni_Valley-Cycle-Route-6334.html and you will find a route sent by a person identified as "anerley bicycle club". I wonder who that could be!

Good write up and thanks to Jeremy for a very interesting ride, parts of which I had not seen before. And yes it was a real struggle against the wind on the way home. Don't ever remember anything quite as hard as that, even having to pedal down hill!

A great ride, I envy you!
Tom Vaz and I stayed for a week at Dolgellau and cycled around the area, including parts of your route from Macchynlleth. It is a fantastic area for cycling, but much better in the summer with no snow! We did find that some of the cycle routes in Wales have been adopted from sheep drovers trails, just as well that you did not try Route 82 into Dolgellau. Our adventure on that bit of drovers trail can be seen at http://anerleybc.org/mynyddoedd-a-llynnoed-mountains-and-lakes/
Spain this year's tour, it has got to be Wales again next year. You have whetted my appetite!

Hi Des et al,

The photos DO add some colour to the e-mail, although I'm not sure that a photo of Bonkers Boris could ever be called a "pretty picture", even if he is on a bike !?!
Cheers from Jim Bush of C.C.C and Pollards Hill Cyclists.

Great to read about your trip - delighted that we were able to get you back on the road without too much trouble. Hope it all goes well for the rest of the ride!

Great thread! the Hastings & St Leonard's Cycling Club claims to have run continuously, without a break for world wars etc. since 1876. here's our current blog; http://www.hastingscc.blogspot.co.uk/

I'd love to see more photos of 1870s club runs, thanks.
